| I was wondering if it's possible to go for a low carb diet as a vegetarian. I can find lots of low GI recipes for vegetarians like this: vegetarian gi recipes. But I'm finding it harder to find low carb options. There don't seem to me many in the cook section of this site. Can any one recommend a good source of recipes? M |

| M, there are many who do vegetarian low carb. There is a forum here for that. Carbwire has an article about vegetarian low carb here: http://www.carbwire.com/2006/03/10/l...o_salad_recipe Have you ever had black soybeans? They are a good source of protein and fiber, and are very versatile. I buy mine from netrition.com, or you can get them direct from Eden Foods at their website. Although I am not vegetarian, I know many are, and wish you and them much success with this way of eating.

| millerton-. it's a bit more challenging to eat lc vegan, but folks do it. you may want to invest in a vegeatarian lc cookbook. that should probably help give you lots of ideas, and i know i've seen 'em. good luck!

In a word - yes, absolutely (well, let me rephrase that - depends what you eat or don't eat). I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian and have been back on lowcarbing as a vegetarian (first time I did it I wasn't vegetarian) and I'm not having any problems. I do eat dairy and eggs, so cheese and eggs are good sources of protein. I don't load up on them too much, though, since I try to get a variety of protein in. If you eat soy, you might try tofu in smoothies (without fruit but with protein powder, cream, and flavorings; or with a bit of berries, if the plan you're on allows it) or in stir-fries. Also, I eat some vegetarian products such as veggie burgers (Boca burgers are low in carbs) and veggie "crumble" (Morningstar Farms makes a good one that is like ground beef and is low in carbs) although I try not to eat these too often just so that I don't get too much processed foods. Also, TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein - sometimes called Soy Vegetable Protein, I think) is available and Bob's Red Mill has one that has a "grainy" texture. It's pretty neutral when you mix it with veggies and spices (again, use like ground beef). I've also heard that you can make a seitan out of wheat gluten but I've never actually tried this. I think if you're a vegan, it's much harder to do lowcarbing, although I think it's definately possible, with a little imagination Tam |
