| Hi, Guess I'm in the mood to join a forum. I was on Atkins a few years ago--both my husband and I lost weight and looked great. Why did I lapse... Hmmm. I was a working professional in the public eye and was motivated to look good. After a move to the hinterlands, I couldn't find a professional job in the same field and kind of "lost my mojo". Next thing I knew, I had become a sweatsuit wearing computer chair potato, hit the big Five-O and stopped recognizing myself in the mirror. Another factor: expense. I couldn't handle the high cost of all the meat I was wheeling out of BJ's and couldn't look at another piece without cringing. What I think causes my gains... I'm not a natural food addict--no regular cravings for anything. (OK, I will eat a whole package of those chocolate hazelnut thingies if someone gives them to me though I won't buy any more after that.) In general, food's food. I don't lie awake at night obsessing about any of it. My issue has always been portion control. I make a lot more food than I need to, concerned that there be enough should my 3 teen/college age sons want "More". I end up eating seconds, probably eating too fast so I'm not feeling full. I come from a big family in both senses (I'm 5'10") and if you didn't grab and eat fast, you might not get as much to eat of the favored foods as you wanted. Old habit to pile it on, since there might not be any left if you waited. So, I make too much and eat too much. ***I need to work on measuring portion sizes for a woman who isn't physically active like I was in my youth.*** I am also not in any exercise program because I have been really stubborn about this idea that exercise should come as a natural result of lifestyle and healthy outdoor endeavors--not on purpose. Of course, I am not living up to these impossible high ideals. I'm considering joining Curves, since I'm so not in shape, something low impact would be a good idea. Walking my collie down and up a hill once a day doesn't count! I have a couple of questions which I will put in a different post. So, howdy everyone! Suji |

| Welcome, Suji. You apparently have some of the same problems I've always had. I come from a large family, (6 brothers & 3 sisters) who were all big eaters, and I've always been a big eater, so portion control is a major problem. And being past 50 means a change in metabolism. Having arthritic knees means exercise is a special challenge. If I don't watch every morsel that goes into my mouth, I find the weight not creeping up, but running full tilt like a race car, packing onto my 5'3 1/2" frame faster than lightning. It's been a real battle. So know that you are not alone in this. I need to knuckle down and get more serious. I find Fitday to be a help, although I hate having to go there and log all my food in every day. But it helps for me to see how I'm doing as far as carbs, and it makes me more conscious of measuring my portions. So back to that for me, too. I hope you find help and encouragement here. I do, every day. |

To change your password, go toward the top of this page and, on the left, you'll see a link for "User CP". This is your user control panel.
