| Hello, I am new, and have started the Atkins today. I wanted ask about smoked fish. I love smoked fish, especially smoked mackerel filletts with a salad. I checked the Fit Day index and smoked mackerel shows that it has no carbs in it. I also checked the label and it stated the same. I am on the induction and I know that fish is permitted but I did not see mackerel listed as being permitted. Can anyone help? Also is there a forum that teaches you how to read food labels with regards to reading the about of carbs in foods. Thank you |

| Fish is a great source of protein, and no carbs unless you add some sort of sauce to it. Mackerel is just fine. Ah, reading labels. You can generally take the carb count and deduct the fiber, so the difference is your net carbs. Now, for the "low carb" treats and such, most contain sugar alcohol, and many of us treat those the same as regular carbs, because they are the cause of stalls for a lot of us. Most food labels here in the U.S. are very informative as to the carb content. Of course, you have to make sure you understand the serving size, too. You don't indicate where you are from. If not in the U.S., then I really don't know about labels from your area. If you are from here, then you'll find labels to be very easily understood. If you have any more questions, come back! |

| On induction you may eat liberally of any meat, fish or fowl. The only thing you need to watch for with smoked fish is that often extra salt is used in the preparation. That may cause you to retain some water, so the scale may edge up a bit the next day. However, this is not fat and, with good hydration, any water you've retained will wash out over the course of a couple of days.
