Default New to Atkin's with some questions.....

Hello, My name is Margo and I am about to start the Atkin's New Diet Revolution. I have been reading the book and am a little confused. Can someone help . . . . please.

On the induction diet can I have pork rinds and/or nuts?

The book says under rule 1 that your allowed 3 C salad vegetables or 2 C salad plus 2/3 C cooked vegetables in the below 10% carb category, I assume this is where the 20 or less grams of carbs are to come from - that and the salad dressing. But, under Rule 5 it says "one could find other combinations totalling less than 20 gms of carbohydrate. One would be using foods like nuts, seeds, olives, avocados, cheeses, cream and sour cream, lemon and lime juices, and low-carbohydrate diet foods." (All this comes from page 93.)

Also, on the page with with the induction food list, uner the salad herbs section it says "for salad dressing use the desired oil plus vinegar or lemon juice and spices. Grated cheese, chopped eggs, bacon, or fried pork rinds may be added."

OK, one last thing.....am I to stay away from the "Vegetables in addition to salad vegetables"?

    Thanks for any help,

    Margo

    Welcome, Margo.

Pork rinds are ok on all phases. They have 0 carbs. Nuts are for later on. A lot of people find them to be a problem addition (portion control is usually the culprit!)

You can eat any combo of vegetables as long as your total carb count, for everything, including your cream, cheese, etc., does not exceed 20 or so each day during induction. For me, well, I'm not a big salad fan unless I'm really in the mood for one, so I don't eat one every day. I'd rather have other veggies, maybe some cucumbers or jicama, bell peppers, etc. You can have all salad for your veggies, or you can combine salad with the other induction-friendly veggies (like zucchini!), or eat only the non-salad veggies. That's the beauty of this way of eating, you design it to fit YOUR eating habits and preferences, as long as you keep your carb count within the acceptable number.

Induction is to get your body to begin burning its fat first, and as you slowly add carbs, usually from vegetables, your fat burning continues, but at a slower rate. This is so you learn what foods you can eat and still continue to lose, and learn how to make this a way of eating (woe) that you can sustain for a lifetime.

You'll find your health improving, too. Many find that they have more energy and stamina, less brain fog, no heartburn, better numbers on their cholesterol, lower blood pressure, fewer aches and pains if they suffer from arthritis or other such conditions. It's surely not a cure-all, but I'd say that the majority of us have seen a marked improvement in our overall health.

Peruse some of the other subjects throughout this forum. You'll find lots of good information. Start with the stickies here in the Newbies section.

And always come back and ask questions. That's how you learn!

Welcome Margo. I cannot add anything to the good advice Nita has given to your questions.

Thanks so much for the info - went shopping today - got lots & lots of eggs, some meats and other low carb stuff. While having a snack (microwaved pepperoni with cream cheese) I decided my girls can have the same. They are 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 so it will be helpful to me not having to have so much "child friendly" (junk) food in the house for them. Yea!!
