Hi, day four of induction and all seems ok, but I sure am getting sick of green leafy's!! I do have a couple q's for the vetrans. When should is a good time to test with ketostix? Does induction really have to be 2 weeks, and mostly-what if I consume carbs not on the induction list, but still adhere to 20 or under? Thanks in advance!

| Welcome, applekiwi. The best time to test for ketosis is in the evening. You kind of sound as if you're doing the Atkins program, but in your public profile, you list your program as "California." I'm not familiar with this plan. How about telling some more about this program?

Welcome! When you decide what foods to eat, make sure you get the biggest nutritional bang for those carbs. So, a serving of broccoli would be much better than carrots, because you can have a larger serving, and more fiber, than what you'd get from the carrots. And remember that no food list can take all foods into consideration. If you aren't sure, get a good carb counter and find out how many carbs and how much fiber a particular food has, and then decide if it will fit into your plan. Induction should last the entire 2 weeks, to get your body into the fat-burning mode, and then gradually add in your carbs. Some people stay on induction for months. It depends on how insulin-resistant you are, and how easily or hard you lose. Hope this was of some help. Wish you success on your low carb journey.

howdy and welcome. when you ask about eating carbs "not on the induction list," are you talking about different veggies, or are you talking about just using the 20 grm count? 'cause there is a big difference what the carbs are, too. so bear that in mind. and regardless of the carb count, you're going to do much better if you stay away from ALL sugar and white flour products. if you give your body a chance to get adjusted to your new way of eating by following the program more closely in the beginning and getting some of that stuff out of your system, it makes the rest so much easier. regardless of what you choose, good luck to you.

Thanks for the Welcome!! I'm following Atkins. (I think I was thinking of my reward when I typed California!) New to this, I have the books, there's just some things I don't understand. Like sugar alcohols-what are they, how do they impact the body, etc. Two weeks it is then for induction. Really need to get rid of this excess that I took on when I quit smoking. Only one at a time. Appriciate all the well wishes!! OH, one more question-what's the diff b/n atkins and south beach programs? Last edited by applekiwi; 03-15-2007 at 07:35 PM. Reason: additional questions

on the sugar alcohols, andrea, the site founder, has a great article here that will help clear up the confusion. personally, i've never followed south beach, so i can't give you a direct answer, but my understanding is that south beach tends to be more restrictive about fats, and more liberal with some carbs.
