Smile Low Carb Newbie-Atkins

Hi All ... so glad I found this place, anytime I mention low carb or atkins to others, eyebrows raise and they usually say things like 'be careful', 'too much fat - not good for your health', and 'yeah, good luck with that'. Not much help or support there.

I am actually starting induction this Monday - I thought I was following a Atkins type diet, but not properly I think. I didnt have the book yet and my understanding is that the diet/way of life eating is essentially cutting my diet to 20g of carbs, so I cut out all sugars and starches and milk. I read labels before eating and tried to eat only 20g of carbs a day -mostly fresh foods (like spring greens, vegs and fruits) and meat and eggs. Havet lost much at all thuogh. The book arrived and I am now going to do induction as per the book I have, which is the 'original' diet book (reprinted 94 I think), not the new revolution, that one will be here in a few weeks, as will the recipe book.

Anyways, I was writing out the ingredients needed, and there are two or three meals that I wont eat and want to do a replacement for them with other items in the menu - is this okay? The items are the scampi, there is a veal menu and a shrimp cocktail- I wont eat that stuff. I am also wondering if my doing low carb for the last two weeks will affect induction in anyway?

Thanks bunches

Welcome Moptopp. Welcome to LCE and I think you'll soon discover how helpful the folks are around here. There is a wealth of info and recipes to use post-induction.
Glad to know that you're reading the book, that's a must.

Make yourself at home.

Welcome Moptopp, You may certainly substitute other acceptable foods for those you don't like. You need to find a variety of different foods that you like so that you don't become bored. Atkins is all about healthy eating. I don't think your last 2 weeks will adversly affect your induction period and they may even help.

Welcome, Moptopp.

I never followed any of the menus exactly. I just ate of the allowed foods combined as I found to be tasty.

I don't think your having reduced carbs over the last two weeks will have any negative effect on your induction. Indeed, you'll probably enter ketosis a bit sooner and likely will have an easier first few days (that sort of detox period.)

Hope you'll make yourself at home.

Moptopp-Yeah, people can be...well, less than helpful sometimes, huh? And often, it seems like the folks who could well benefit from making a few alterations to their own eating habits that squeal the loudest when you say the word, "Atkins."

I have, however, found that after a few dozen pounds gone, they'll shut right up and some of 'em will even start asking for advice.

Sounds like you're doing fine so far. You're right to get the book and find out the "rules," because that makes it much easier and makes your chances of success MUCH higher overall. The cookbook is another great idea.

As Maggie pointed out, your start into, uh, "non-demoninational low carbing", will probably make your adjustment easier and lessen the chances for you to go through any ugly sugar/carb withdrawls. So it's all good. Consider it a process, not something you can do right or wrong so much. Even if you're following the plan to the letter, there will be indiviual pecularities with your own body that you'll learn along the way. Sometimes, you will have issues with something that doesn't cause problems for others, and sometimes, you won't have issues with something that can be difficult for others.

It's a learning experience, but sounds like you're headed in the right direction. Hang out here and you'll get lots of useful info.

Peace out.

Smile Re: Low Carb Newbie-Atkins

Thanks for the welcome and advice ... I am really looking forward to this ... i may not have lost weight, but i feel a little lighter though ... cant be upset with that!!

Does the type of 'greens' matter - I prefer spring mix (has like 4 types of greens), or should be the romaine/head lettuce varieties.

This 'gelatin' is it Jello I should be getting or is there something out there called gelatin and can i get it at a regular food store (sorry I never cook! I heat up canned foods...smiles.).

Thanks bunches

If you're doing atkins, most all the greens are okay. Just check their website for the official list until you get your book.

For geletin, there is unflavored gelatin you can by at the store. It will be around the Jello, and Knox is the brand you'll normally find.

Canned food in the microwave I also call cooking, although sometimes i do get a bit more ambitious.

Peace out.

Hi Moptopp,
Sugar Free Jello brand gelatin is fine except it is sweetened with nutrasweet, which was not the prefered sweetner recommended by Dr Atkins(he prefered Splenda brand).
But, many of us use sf jello and have no problems, so it's ok.
However, if you would prefer to make your own, you can mix unsweetened Kool-aid, splenda and the above mentioned Knox plain gelatin. There are several recipes for making your own gelatin in our recipe section.
here is a recipe I use:

hope this helps
