Default Going on vacation...

Hi all! After 3 weeks of induction (and a total of 10 pounds lost!) I've decided to move cautiously into OWL. We'll see how that goes. My issue is that next week DH and I are going on vacation with my in laws. It's a fairly large group, so I won't have much say as to where we eat. Does anyone have suggestions for staying on plan (as much as possible) while traveling? I don't want to undo all of the progress I've made!

Wow, 10 lbs! Congratulations!

Not having a say as to where you eat can be a problem. If at all possible, try to have a nice salad with every meal. Ask the waiter if they have veggies instead of potatoes. And drink water with your meal. That way you're sure to get a healthy dose of your daily water intake. If you can keep a bottle of water with you at all times, that will help, too.

If there is any way to keep snacks available, so you'll have something to tide you over if you can't get enough at your meals. String cheese, little bags of pork rinds (like you find in a convenience store), boiled eggs, pepperoni, celery sticks, etc.

It all depends on where you eat as to how close you can stick to your plan. Or how tempted you are when everyone around you is eating carby foods.

I sure wish you success. And have a great vacation.

Hey, speaking of gong on vacation, I just came back from a long weekend on vacation with my boyfriend and his mom. I didn't even cheat once, and exercised every day and came back + pounds. Is it just the freakin IDEA of vacation that makes us gain weight?! Geez!!!

Next friday I'm going on a cruise with my whole family for my birthday and fathers' day and I have no idea what will happen there. My 21st bday is definitely a once in a lifetime thing to celebrate, and I want to enjoy it with everyone that I love being there! I DO NOT want to come back 15 pounds heavier! I think I plan on just eating carbs in one of my meals a day. Maybe saving them for dessert each day, whatever I feel I need for the day. Probably have a frozen drink here and there because how can you turn one of those down in the bahamas?!!!

Genny, I have been on several cruises since I started this WOE. It is possible to stay on plan and not feel deprived on a cruise. I do not know what kind of low carb plan you are following, as you seem to have made up your own. However, it seems to me that you want to celebrate your 21st birthday by repeatedly consuming high carb food a beverages. That is your choice. Here is a link to a thread that may give you some perspective. http://70.84.16.198/low-carb-diet-su...ad.php?t=13370
I certainly am not telling you not to celebrate your birthday. Enjoy it, and if you happen go off plan and regain some weight, at least you will know where it came from and what you need to do lose it again. Enjoy your cruise, celebrate with your family, and then just get back on the low carb wagon, if you do happen to fall off of it on the cruise.

Hi garden bfly!

My suggestion is similar to Nita's... whenever I go out to eat I ask for extra veges instead of potato or rice, always have a salad, and if it's breakfast, I say "no bread" and ask for cottage cheese and/or sliced tomatoes, or fruit instead of hashbrowns. Most restaurants don't even bat an eyelash when I ask for these things. I think it's pretty common now, with LC and diabetics.

You can stay on plan pretty much at any restaurant (unless it's very specialized) and if it's fast food, just use the burger bun as a "holder" and peel it away as you eat, then have a salad instead of fries.

Really, it's do-able. You'll be fine! Have a great trip!!

Well, I'm back from vacation. Thanks everyone for their tips--I definitely used many of them. I did fairly well, not perfect, but pretty good. I did eat a little fruit most days and had a few drinks, but I stayed away from bread, potatoes, rice, etc. I was also fairly active, and I ended up losing about 2 pounds in the 2 weeks I was gone. Not great, but I'm just extremely relieved I didn't gain any weight.

Also encouraging, I just went into the doctor for a routine physical and my BP is the lowest it's ever been I must be doing something right. Now it's back to the straight and narrow of Atkins, counting carbs, and exercise...

Fantastic! Losing on vacation is a great sign that you've become really savvy about this way of eating.

Good work, bfly.
