Default Hello from a Newie

Hello,

I've been doing low-carb (atkins) for 8 weeks and lost 18lbs in the first 6 which I was so pleased about. But for the past 2 weeks - not cheated at all - haven't lost an ounce. Any ideas on what I can do to lose more?

Thanks for any advice
Love
Jan x

Welcome, Jan.

Weight loss seldom follows a "straight line" for very long. Plateaus, or "stalls" are common along the way. Various factors (age, gender, how far one is from a normalized weight, etc.) impact on the rate of loss.

On the other hand, sometimes you've added something in OWL that has proven to be a problem to others.

How about sharing a few days of eating? The veteran members are pretty good at spotting things you may want to take a second look at.

Hope you'll make yourself at home here.

As you can see no other veg on here as seriously don't like veg and what I do like, I'm not allowed!!

jan- welcome.

you mention a lot of veggies you're not allowed? what phase of atkins are you in? at 8 weeks in, i'd expect you'd be moved on to owl, and can gradually add veggies into your menu as your preferences and results allow.

regardless, it sounds like you're eating very little at all. it's possible your metabolism has slowed if you're not eating enough. if you haven't moved on to owl and started upping your carb intake, that's the first thing i'd suggest, as well as adding veggies.

please do be aware as well that low-carb is not NO carb. i realize people have different feeligngs about veggies, but they are a staple of low-carbing and very important. people also often make the mistake of thinking that if a little restriction helps you lose weight, that LOTS will help more and faster. that is seldom the case, and from what i've seen, often has the opposite impact. veggies are healthy carbs that usually have little impact on blood sugars and give us the nutrients we need. and no matter where you are with veggies, do consider taking a good multivitamin.

good luck to you.

Hi Jan! Welcome!!

I'm with Goddess on this one - you need to up your food intake and up your veggies. They fill you up and are SO good for you.

What are the veges that you do like? If it's potaoes you like, there is a mashed fauxtato recipe that is fantastic here. It uses cauliflower as a substitute. And actually, there are a bunch of ways to use cauliflower as a substitute that are quite yummy (fauxtato salad, faux rice, and even chunking the stem and using it in homemade clam chowder in place of potatoes - yummy! (really!) )

As far as other vegetables go, I've found that cheese makes everything taste good.

One other thing to keep in mind - it doesn't have to be difficult to make to taste good, either. One of my favorite things to do is drain a can of green beans, put them in a shallow bowl and sprinkle some French's onions and shredded cheese on top, then nuke until hot. Yum! Or, the other day I didn't want to drag out my food processor to make the mashed fauxtatoes, so I just used a potato masher and then sprinkled in some bacon bits in addition to the cream cheese and other ingredients - lumpier, but still yummy.

Let us know what you like and we can come up with suggestions for you!

Again, welcome to LCE. Post often and let us know how it's going.

Thanks again everyone for your help. The only veg I like are mushrooms, tomatoes, garden peas and sweetcorn and didn't think I was allowed to eat the last two. Obviously love potatoes but know they're a no-no and hate any salad - comes from being force fed it at school dinners.

So do you really think I'm not eating enough - should I be eating things mid-morning and afternoon too?

Sorry for all the question but would love to lose more and seem to be stuck.

Thanks
Jan x

Jan, if you are in OWL, you can add sweet corn from time to time. 1/2 an ear has between 5 and 8 carbs for a small or medium ear and makes a nice treat. I see that you like garden peas. Those would be a problem. However, I use either snow peas or sugar snap peas instead. Both are low carb. I do think you need to add some carbs and calories to your diet to avoid having your body slow down its metabolism because it thinks you are starving.

you might try a lc cookbook, too, to get some new ideas for different ways to fix veggies. with a little experimentation, you may find different stuff you like...

Thumbs up Re: Hello from a Newie

Thanks everyone for all your advice and welcomes I'll give eating more a go and report back in a few days - hopefully I'll have some good news. Weighed again this morning and still exactly the same - think I need to chop off my thunder thighs.

Thanks again,
Jan

Hey Jan!

In addition to the recipes on this site, here's a link to another great LC recipe site... she has great stuff!

I've also found that I get better recipes on the web than I do in a LC cookbook. Plus, it's cheaper!

Have fun trying new stuff! (Seriously, give the mashed fauxtatoes a whirl - they're fabulous!)

Hi, Jan, and welcome to LCE.

I hope that you've found other foods to eat that will compliment your low carb plan. This article -- straight from this site -- gives a list of some of the lower-carb foods you can eat. I've always found it helpful to choose from a list, and hope that this helps.

Let us know how you're doing!
