| I am wondering if it's possible to still lose if you have a "carbfest" (fastfood hamburger, ice cream, etc. ) on the weekends, but stick to less than 20 grams of carbs during the weekdays. I'm not talking about a carb orgy, but just eating things that you normally wouldn't eat...and saving that for a specific time and place. |

| Hi Shelley, It may be possible to lose, if you eat in the CAD/CALP style. On CAD the goal is to eat low carb 2 meals, and the 3rd meal is called a *reward* meal. There are certain *restraints* on the reward meal: It has to be completely finished and NO more eating after 60 minutes, your plate must be divided into thirds with: craving reducing protein, craving reducing vegetables, and the last third can be carb rich food(including dessert), Also you must begin your reward meal by eating at least 2 cups of fresh salad greens. The third guideline is to eat only craving reducing foods at all other meals and snacks. Go here to find out more about CALP. What you are suggesting though, I(personally) would hesitate to do, simply because you are going to be allowing large glycogen stores to occur, and therefore throwing your body out of the fat burning mode that LC eating achieves. Depending on how much of a carb *blow out* you have, it could possibly take you 2-4 days to deplete the glycogen stores before you would start burning fat again. Good luck with your decision. HTH Shelley

| What a great response Shelleyg! I've tried cheating one day a week and found that I can lose if I don't overdo it. If I go to high in carbs and calories it can take me two weeks to loose what I did in one day. But I end up feeling pretty sick to my stomach, have been known to (tmi warning) get diarrhea and even throw up. I remember one time my DH holding my hair while I was getting sick saying how I shouldn't have eaten that much pie - yuck! So I just wanted to give you a warning that this could happen. |

I know that when I was strictly doing LC last year, my cheating is what made me fall off the wagon. If I can have just a day or a time or a meal, then I wouldn't feel like I'm depriving myself or cheating. Like for instance...if I know that on Sunday, I can have ice cream, instead of never, it would be so much easier for me to get my thinking right. The thinking is what is the hardest to change for me! I never got sick when I ate too much sugar, but very tired! |

I don't eat in the living room any longer. I only eat at the dining room table with no TV to watch, and I no longer view the ice cream as a "reward" for myself. You see, I can no longer view food as a "reward" or else I manufacture things to do so that I can have a food reward. Instead, I know that my eating regimen allows me to have that ice cream once a week, so, on Saturday or Sunday evening, I sit at the table and eat that one bowl of no-sugar-added ice cream. It's not a reward for me, it's just food, and that's how I "get my thinking right." I reward myself other ways for a job well done. For instance, I cleaned the house thoroughly yesterday, and I went to WalMart afterwards and bought a beautiful floor lamp to accent the living room. For the past few months I've been trying this motto: "Eat to live, and don't live to eat." I know what you mean about getting your thinking right. It's mental with me, as well. When I find myself wanting to have an out-and-out carbfest, I just get myself busy. If nothing else, I get in the car and drive around the neighborhood. It helps. Just my two cents.........

While everyone has to decide for themselves what works for them and what doesn't, the real benefits of low-carbing are from consistently moderating your carb intake, not the total carb intake over a week's span. I mean, you could theoretically eat virtually no carbs all week, and get your entire weeks supply in a weekend "carb fest," but i suspect not only would that not work well for weight management, but it sounds very unhealthy to boot. and i'll bet you'd feel terrible on top of it. i do sometimes eat offplan. i find that for me, it works best if it's planned and limited. i also try to avoid any sugar, offplan or not, because i've found that sugar will stimulate my appetite and make it harder for me to maintain low-carb the rest of the time regardless of the carb count. a little sugar, i'm hungry for the next couple of days. i also find that if i eat a lot of carbs in a short time span, for the next few days, i'm VERY hungry and crave stuff that i hadn't been interested in for a while. so for me, serious carb-outs cost me more than i "gain" from indulging. the real bottom line-your behind doesn't know what day of the week it is. peace out. |

| I'm having a colonoscopy tomorrow, so all I can have is clear liquids the day before. and I have to drink this ghastly concoction the doctor gave me (makes me gag!). It's amazing how I can control myself when I "have" to! |

| Hi... I found it was best to stick to the plan...I know it is not always possible but I had a holiday (about 6 months ago) so had to eat off plan occasionally during the two weeks and now I am having to go back to induction cos I seem to be craving things I have not eaten for a while and have gained 9kgs roughly 20 lbs without really noticing too much, apart from clothing getting tighter. I have also found it much harder to get back into the induction mode and give in a lot easier than before so if you can just say no to off plan foods...........It will make the road easier for you. Good Luck ![]() |

| My idea of a carb weekend is to have about 2 large cappuccinos on a 1 day of the weekend it causes me to stall or just out and out blow it. After that it takes about 4 days for me to get back in keto state. I would stick to my guns cause in my case it starts a rollercoaster. |

Doesn't Dr. A warn against doing this on a consistent basis in DANDR? It's the old yo-yo type dieting syndrome that can damage your metabolism. ![]() |
