| I've been reading Jonny Bowden's book, "Living the Low Carb Lifestyle". He does an excellent job explaining why low carb eating works and gives the best explanation I've seen anywhere (admittedly, in my limited knowledge of LC!), of how insulin plays a part in all this scheme. I found it interesting in the extreme that his description of the old Scarsdale Diet -- which closely resembles at least one current VLCLF diet under scrutiny now -- is the ONE diet Bowden says is trash, dangerous and don't do it at any cost. I, for one, am convinced. I'm switching to either PP or Atkins (maybe a hybrid plan, not sure yet) immediately. Now if I can get over gaining back a couple pounds as my body readjusts to getting a little more healthy fat, I'll be ok ![]()

| Hey Steph- Glad to hear you found the book helpful. I am a BIG believer that the most important tool in any LC aresenal is education! The better you understand how it all works, the better you can make informed decisions regarding your own path. It takes time to figure it out, but since this is a lifestyle and not just a quick fix diet, we've got time. I also usually suggest people start with an established plan they feel comfortable with, and, over time as they learn more about what works for them and doesn't, begin to customize it. That gives you a solid base to start from and can be quite helpful to get a good start. And don't worry: we won't be having any bashfests here! One of the things that I most value about the community of this site is the caring, helpful nature of members. While a group this big will undoubtedly disagree sometimes (and we do!), I've found folks to be very respectful overall of the struggles of others and the right of each individual to find their own way. We all have a lot of the same exerpeicnes and frustrations. And each of us has to find our own answers to the questions that come up. We're here to share our experiences and encourage one another. And we don't "do flaming," 'cause that's not a helpful, positive contribution to the overall well-being of the community. We take the well-being of our members quite seriously here, in case you hadn't noticed yet. ![]() But regardless, I'm glad to hear you're feeling some more clarity in your own journey, as remember: we're here to help. Peace out. |

| Thank you for the encouragement! I have collected a few books in the past couple of days, and doing a lot of reading and research. It's all fascinating!
