This may sound ridiculous, but is it safe to continue this woe while pregnant?

This is not a ridiculous question! Usually it's recommended that you eat at maintenance level during pregnancy. Every bite you eat should have lots of nutrition for both the mother & baby, so no junk carbs. Any carbs should be from nutrient-dense foods, veggies, fruits, whole grains. Of course, anyone who is pregnant should listen to their obstetrician about proper diet during pregnancy. Especially about artificial sweeteners, caffeine, and processed meats and cheese.

I imagine there are quite a few low carbers out there who have experience with low carb and pregnancy. I think it will be interesting to see what they have to say!

Hey 2B,
The most important thing for low carbing during pregnancy, is NOT to let yourself get into ketosis. Nutrition is so very important during pregnancy; basically just eating healthy, getting in all the food groups especially adequate intake of protein, fruits and vegetables, dairy, and even whole grains like oats, long grain rice and other beneficial grains. If you avoid the sugary stuff, junk foods, things with empty calories, you'll do fine. As always, discuss your food plan with your doctor or dietician and follow their advice.

Nita & Shelley, thank you for your input. I know that I need to discuss this with my OB, it just my appt is not until 9/12. I have been keeping my carbs a little on the lower side. I have been trying to find just the right amount for me, now this. I guess I am just worried about putting to much weight back on. I have been working so hard on the weight loss and swore I'd never gain that weight back, and hear I am.

This was totally unexpected so I think I am still in shock a little bit. I feel like everything has just been turned upside down. Don't get me wrong I am happy I just feel like the timing is a little off - but hey on the bright side maybe it will be a little girl!

Thank you so much for the advice - I hope other will chime in with there thoughts.

Christina

Christina, I guessed from your post that you might either be pregnant or considering getting pregnant. Congratulations, even if it comes at an unexpected time.

Right now is not the time to worry about losing weight, just focus on eating only healthy foods, keeping your baby healthy, and keeping yourself healthy. And don't forget moderate exercise.

Keep us posted. We're all here for you. And we're all excited for you!

Christina,
Congratulations!!!
I think you will do just fine seeing that you are so aware of healthy eating now. That makes a big impact on how you chose your foods. As far as trying to find the *right amount*, try this website:
http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm#

plug in your stats and see what maintenance level calories and carbs are. Under the advanced option, you can look at low carb...avoid the Very low carb(ketogenic) option. As always, this is just a guideline, and may not be right for you, so check with your dr.

Another option is the pregnancy plan at Weight Watchers. Not particularly low carb per se, but Dr approved most of the time.

Above all, do what's right for you and with your Dr's blessing

Yes, I am pregnant. I just found out last week. I am excited but my goodness what a shift in thinking ya know.

Thank you both so much I really appreciate all your help. I am thinking about maybe starting a journel here. I know there has to be others in my situation, so maybe that will make it eaiser for them.

I am so glad that I found this website, you all are the most supportive group of people I have ever met - and it doesn't even have to be about the low carb stuff either.

I will certainly let you all know what the doc has to say.

Shelley thanks for the website I found out what my calories are to maintain my current weight so atleast that is a starting point.

I am not to concerned about a normal weight gain - I'm afraid that it all will come back. You see I only gained 11 lbs with my first son and 6 lbs with my second. Doc said I probably lost while the baby gained.

Thanks, Shelley. I read through it yesterday - the entire post.

I think I am going to start a new post asking if there are any other pregnant low-carbers out there.

It is so hard to find 100 carbs to eat a day - gosh it sounds like so many!

In the end all the weight gain will be worth it!!

Thanks again for all the helpful info!!

i had a friend my age who just had a baby about a year ago. (and that's @ 41!) i'll say to you exactly what I said to her:

"I"m happy for you, and I'm happy it IS you!" I guess it is your destiny. Glad it's not mine! My baby just turned 18 and that's fine with me.

I'm 37 and Dh is 46. We have a 5yr boy and a 2 yr old boy!
All I have to say is it better be a girl !!

Goddess - everyone says that! When I was 25 I found out I had POVS, and endometriosis (?) - so I thought that I wouldn't be able to have children. I do have very hard pregnancy - but in the end it so worth it! So even though I am a little nervous and a bit surprised I absolutely can't wait to meet my new little one.

lkvercher - I agree that it is more common these days - but a lot of my friends have children in high school. I wish I would/could have started a little earlier.

Thank you all for your support!
