![]() Hi. My name is Bonnie and I live in Pa and I am 41 years old. I feel I really need to loose some weight and I have heard of this low carb dieting. I have decided to give it a shot and would like any advice from anyone. I would love to loose 100 pounds but I know it is not going to happen overnight. A few questions that come to mind is how many carb calories (or what it is called) should I consume in a day? Can I combine a low carb and low fat diet? What are some DON'T eats or FREE eats? Please bare with me.. as I said I am new to this and just want to finally succeed at losing the pounds! Thanks for this site. It seems like something I may need to give me that extra BOOST! Thanks. | Hi Bonnie, Welcome to LCE. As always, it is your choice as to what LC food plan you want to follow. But, the best thing you can do for yourself is to read up on the food plans and get the book for the plan you select. Most folks here do follow Atkins, or a variation thereof. Other popular plans are South Beach, Protein Power, CAD(Carbohydrate Addicts Diet), and some folks still Zone. I can't tell you how important it is for you to have the book. Hardly a day goes by that I don't reference mine. Really. This is a wonderful place for support and encouragement; lots of really nice folks here, I'm happy to say! As to combining low carb and low fat...it can be done, but usually not very successfully. You need fat in the diet. Choose your plan with the book, educate yourself, get your cabinets in *order*(toss out the bad stuff, bring in the healthy stuff), drink your water, work in some exercise, and you'll be way ahead in the weight loss journey. hth s

| Hi Bonnie & WELCOME! As a long-time low-carber, I totally agree with Shelley. With this way of eating, KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! The more information you have going in to it, the more successful you will be. No matter which low-carb plan you ultimately decide to follow, I highly recommend that you read PROTEIN POWER by Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades. Even if you decide not to follow that specific program (although, it's great!), their book (in my humble opinion) does the BEST job of explaining how and why this way of eating WORKS. It's very clear and concise and is not as dry or confusing as some of the other books out there. I usually recommend it to someone just starting out. There are lots of other great, helpful books that you will probably want to read as you go along, but this is a good place to start. I absolutely wish you the best of luck with your new way of eating! Summer =)

| Welcome Bonnie. This is a terrific place you have come to for support. Just a note on trying to incorporate low fat with low carb. If you decrease your carbs you must make up the calories somewhere as nobody should eat less than about 1200 calories a day. Excess protein is converted to glucose in your blood therefor the only other macro nutrient you can consume if you are cutting carbs and reducing the production of glucose in your blood is fat. What we try to do is consume healthy fats instead of unhealthy fats like hydrogenated fats. Read labels and stay away from High Fructose corn syrup (HFC) and hydrogenated oil. Just my 2 cents worth.
