Question can you have 2 much water?

I have followed Atkins pretty much for the last 4 years. I lost a total of about 70 pounds. I went off plan this past spring while I was quitting smoking and gained a bit back. Now I am back on plan and in my first week of induction....
My question is --- does anyone else experience greater thirst. I have always taken in many liquids during the course of my day but I am really much more thirsty than I was. I am a borderline diabetic and am having much success controlling my sugars by eating lc.
It is not even noon yet and I have had a coffee, 2 green teas, between 24 and 48 oz of water and a can of Diet Coke (my weekday treat). By the end of the workday I will have ingested close to 1 gallon of water...Usually at home after work I will have at least another gallon of water. It seems the more water I drink the more thirsty I am.

Anyone else experience this?
OR ideas as to what causes this....I think I may have to move my desk to the ladies room acros the hall. It would be awful tough to teach from there not to mention embarrassing!

Thanks
Amy

Amy, your thirst might just regulate itself. First, take stock of what you've been eating. Are you eating things that are somewhat salty, that might provoke more thirst? If so, try cutting out some of those foods. Give your body a little time to adjust, and see if you still have a thirst problem.

Some people do well drinking lots and lots of water, but excessive thirst could signal a problem, so if it continues, you probably ought to go see your doctor and find out if there might be an underlying problem.

BTW, it's good to see you here, I hope you find lots of support and encouragement.

Hi Amy,
There are 2 red flags in your post:
borderline diabetes
unquenchable thirst

Increased/constant thirst can be a symptom of diabetes...not borderline, but full blown, in need of insulin, diabetes.

We cannot give you medical advice or opinions; no one here is qualified to do that.

I would urge you to call/see your physician as soon as possible.

I absolutely do experience this! The more water I drink, the more I want to drink. After a while, I just crave it! I have no idea what's a play that makes it this way. My friends and family initially made fun of me for that 64 oz jug I carry around the house, but have gotten used to it and will occasionally even ask that i share but if I"m "in the swing," I go through anywhere between 1-3 of them a day.

You can have too much water, but it's unusual. The potential for problems with too much water not from the water itself so much as the electrolyte imbalances caused by not spacing it out is my understanding.

I knew it had been discussed here and I found some threads. one is here -

in one of the discussions, a member posted this link, which i thought was very informative on the issue.

if you do a search for posts with "water intoxication" you can find more talk on it.

The LC rule of thumb I always hear is to drink 1/2 your body weight in oz. of water spaced throughout the day. For me, it took a while to work up to that.

Don't have a cure for the frequent water closet trips, though. If I was at your work and you had your desk in there, you'd see me pretty regularly.

Thanks so much Shelley, for pointing that out! I missed that entirely.

Amy-With the possibility of this being related to a specific medical concern, I'm going to close the thread for further discussion. We're very careful to make sure we don't stray into providing medical advice on the forums for the wellbeing of all our members.

I do hope you'll decide to discuss it with your doctor, though. We want you to stay well!
