Default Does it have to be completely sugar free?

Don't know if this is the correct place to post this but here goes. Had some turkey sausage links this am for breakfast and I had checked the carbs and sugar on them beforehand-both zero. Then I looked at the ingredients and one of the last ingredients was sugar! I almost plotzed as this is only my 3rd day on Induction. How can the carb/sugar stare zero if there IS sugar in the product? And have I screwed my Induction up already?

kat- i'm sure someone else will chime in if i'm offbase, but i think you're fine. avoid the sugar as much as possible, yes, but you checked the nutritionals first. look at the serving sizes to see if they're realistic. if it's below a certain amount per serving, they can claim 0 carbs or sugar even if there are some if it's less than .5 gram per serving, if i'm not mistaken. that's why people sometimes count packets of spenda as a carb even though it says none.

the fact that it was one of the last ingredients listed is in your favor, though, since they are listed by amounts added, so that means there was a small amount of sugar in it.

i wouldn't worry about it. just keep a watchful eye and do your best to avoid it in general...

Thanks for the reply. The zero carbs/sugar was for 2 links and I had 4. I was just looking at my mayo jar and it too says zero carbs/sugar for 1 tbsp of mayo yet has sugar at the end of the ingredients list. What-is there sugar in EVERYTHING in this country? Sheesh! Really have to be on my guard here and remember to check the ingredients list carefully even when the carb/sugar says zero. Kinda stinks.

sugar is in darned near everything, isn't it? for me, i do the best i can to avoid as much sugar as possible, but i know it's in a LOT of stuff...if i have a choice between something with and without, i choose the without, of course, but i don't stress too much over small amounts, because, as you noticed, it's everywhere...

I always wondered why they bother putting sugar in if it's even less than the amount of salt & spices! What's the point?

Yep, sugar is in everything, especially corn syrup. When I had my corn allergy, corn syrup would make me break out in hives quicker than eating corn chips, so I had to start reading labels, and was totally amazed at how many products have corn or corn syrup or corn starch in them. It really opened my eyes. But I don't obsess over things like sausage or lunch meats if the sugar is way at the bottom of the list.

Katalina, I can't add anything to the advice already given by Dixie and Nita. I'm pretty sure your food choices are much better with this WOE, compared to how you were probably eating in the past. Even if you count the sugar in your turkey sausages.

BTW, wecome aboard!

Agree with all comments above. Adding this: I usually will count something if I have over the serving size. For instance the Splenda, I usually have 1/2 pkt. If I have more than that in one day, I will count one carb. Those sausages, I might count one if I ate 2x the serving amount. and I usually DO eat more than the serving amount. Way to go on checking the ingredients and not just the nutritional info. I pretty much never do that. Maybe I should!

I did count the sausages as 1 carb though I grumbled mightily as I did so. Stupid sausages. Thanks for all the comments and thoughts.
