Default Advantage Bars

Hi guys-just finished my 1st week of Induction and lost 7#'s!dance2 I was amazed as I had a rough weekend and though I didn't go off Induction I did eat quite a bit of protein/meat to take the edge off my hormone-induced hunger. (Darn this menopause!)

Anyway, I was noticing some negative comments about Atkins bars on some older threads. Why? Is there a problem with them? I hope not as I like to have an Advantage bar for breakfast on the mornings that I get up waaay too early and walk. 4x/week.

If the bars are not a good thing please let me know. Thank you.

Katalina,
The bars are a YMMV(your mileage may vary) thing. For some people, they TOTALLY stop the weight loss, (I am one!) and for others, they can stall or greatly slow down the weight loss.
What is bad about the bars is that most of them contain glycerine, and sugar alcohols(think maltitol) and this can keep your cravings for sweets very much on the front burner.
On your busy/early days perhaps you could have a pre-made *to-go* breakfast waiting on you in the fridge; maybe some cream cheese or peanut butter on celery sticks, egg muffins, etc.
As a general rule, most folks do better sticking to real and fresh foods vs the *frankenfoods*.
You will have to be the judge to see how these things impact how you feel and your rate of weight loss.

Shelly, Thanks for the heads up. I can't say I've noticed any increased hunger with the bars but I'm certainly going to cut down on them now. I don't think peanut butter is an induction food and I'm planning on staying on induction for 6-8 weeks. Will boil up some eggs and buy some cheese sticks. I'm just amazed that the Atkins folks don't have a problem with their bars.

Some people can get by with them fine, and for others, it causes problems as Shelley mentioned. If you're gonna try 'em, I'd suggest at least waiting until after induction.

Fewer people report problems with the shakes than the bars, but in general, as S. said, the more natural the food, the better you do. Atkins' propensity to market the specialty foods (without at least some warning that they're not for everybody) is one of my personal beefs with 'em.

Have you checked out the one minute muffin thread in the cooking section? that can be made induction-legal, can be mixed beforehand to just nuke in the morning and is a favorite here...

You can make the OMM the night before and keep it in the fridge. I like to split it and fill with a bit of sweetened cream cheese, then wrap it and put in the fridge. It's surprisingly good chilled, especially with the filling. And it doesn't take much cream cheese to make a nice filling. You could also just butter it.

After you've eaten real foods, the frankenfoods don't taste nearly as good. A bar is fine on the rare occasion when you need sustenance and you don't have access to a meal (such as an early morning meeting), but I certainly wouldn't want to rely on them.

The boiled eggs are a great option, too. A nice little package of protein goodness, easily portable, in their own little container!

OOOOO-thanks for the muffin and muffin/cream cheese idea guys. That sounds a lot tastier than an Atkins bar-Yum.
