ok, the first column with the envelopes gives an idea of how many posts there are in the thread. closed envelopes don't have a response yet, if i'm not mistaken....if there is an arrow on the envelope, you've made a post in that thread. the brighter colors means more posts to that thread.
if there is a lock, it means the thread is closed. we sometimes close threads that are mostly for info so people don't respond to them and get lost that way if we don't notice the new response.
when there is a little check by the title, you can hit that to go to the first unread thread in a post. that means you've read some of it, so it takes you to the first new one.
the checkmarks to the far right after the title show threads you're susbscribed to.
and the little pictures in the blue column are the "post icons" that people set when they make a new thread. it's at the bottom of the area when you post. if you "go advanced" with your replies, you can also set a new post icon.
so basically they're just visual cues of what is happening with a particular post and your involvement in the post. make sense, kinda?
