Default Aspartame

I drank two cans of soda sweetened with aspartame yesterday and I became ravenous afterward. It was horrible. Don't know if I'm hyper-sensitive to the sweetener or if something else in the soda triggered the hunger.

I only drink 1-2 cans of soda a week and it's usually Diet Rite that's sweetened by Splenda. I don't have trouble with small amounts of caffeine so it wasn't that.

Anyone else have this happen to them?

I drink stuff like Crystal Light, and the WalMart brand of drinks, and have never had a problem. And non-Splenda sodas don't cause me problems, either. But I've heard of others who have had problems with aspartame. I suppose it's an individual thing.

I really prefer sodas w/Splenda, all the Diet Rite flavors, diet Big Red, etc. Wish the other sodas would get on the ball and use Splenda, it just tastes so much better.

Hey Kat - been there done that - I also have to watch my Splenda intake. Anything over a few packets a week and I'm feeling some really nasty side effects. Nita's right, it just hits people differently. So - well you just need to avoid that stuff! (welcome to the club???) As always, nothing beats water. Zush it up with lemon or cucumber or a few slices of strawberry and lots of ice - making more of a treat drink seems to work best for people. Hang in there, it's all a learning process!!

I gave up aspartame (& all artificial sweeteners) cold turkey a few months ago. I was getting headaches , heart palpatations and shortness of breath. So, my own personal opinion that the stuff is addictive and pretty much rots the insides.

cheers

I have Lupus and my new Doc asked me (knowing I have cut sugar) if I drank or eat anything with aspartame. I checked my dink mix and sure enough... also my sugar free jello and so on and so on....He told me to cut it all out! I went through the worst withdrawals for about 2 weeks but now feel so much better. He told me that it actually makes it harder to lose weight and aggravates my lupus...GRR

Thanks. I got gthrough the withdrawal and Aspartame addiction ok. Only to be diagnosed with cancer about 1 month later. Surgery got rid of the cancer. I get my last radiation treatment next Friday. I am definitely convinced that Aspartame played a role in getting cancer.

We should really examine all the crap and additives that we put into our bodies. I am convinced more than half the chronic illnesses and weight gain people get is because of our lifestyle un natural food choices.

We just started cutting all sugar and chemical sweeteners from our diet. I use Stevia now. It is made from a plant , and It doesn't raise my husband's blood sugar level. But I find it hard to use for baking.... nit that we eat much baking, but the occasional treat. Anyone else tried stevia??

I have used stevia, in liquid form but only as a sweetener for my morning bowl of Maggie's cereal. I have a couple of bottles of stevia powder but I have not used them yet as I rely mainly on liquid concentrated splenda as my a/s of choice. Here is a link to a site that has a number of recipes for baking with stevia. They are not however geared to low carb.
