| carmen-it's an ongoing proposition. when i plan eating activities with friends, they all know now that i eat lc and therefore we work it in to whatever we're eating, just like i take into account my vegan friends eating habits when we dine together. i don't consider it rude to avoid eating sugar and white flour. what i do consider rude is if someone tries to make me feel guilty for not eating what i know is best for me and my health. potlucks are easy...make sure you have something you feel good about eating to contribute to the mix. nobody will probably even notice you pass by the desserts and load up on the veggies and protien. bbq's can be VERY lc friendly...lots of meat, usually. avoid the potato salad and chips, of course. look for veggies. and bring some veggies and lc dip to contribute if you need sides! it takes practice and thinking ahead, but in short order, once you make the adjustments (and stop thinking about refusing cake as "rude"), and your friends and family figure out this is what you want to do and helps you feel good, it becomes easier all the time. you can do it!

| you do have to be so careful. whether friends are well meaning and forgot your woe or whether you have people who will purposely derail you - you are the person who controls what is put in your mouth! i have been in these situations. and i eat what i should not what i think other people would expect me to. at first it was a little dicey, now no one says much...except for the sabetours who offer me something sweet to eat. and they are just plain silly!

| If you're invited to eat a meal with someone, don't be shy about asking what the menu is. If it's something you probably shouldn't eat, let them know that you really appreciate the invitation, but that particular food is a problem for you. If they are a true friend, they'll understand. And never be afraid to let them know what kinds of foods you can eat. If the menu isn't planned yet, you might suggest a simple meal, and ask what you can bring. And don't be shy about inviting your friends to eat with you, and prepare them a low carb meal that's to die for. Show them that eating low carb is delicious, not boring. Who knows? You might convert some to your way of eating.
