Kizzy, if you're losing weight fast, you might be losing quite a bit of water weight, which could mean losing potassium, which can cause leg problems. Just a thought. Doesn't hurt to try a supplement.

Kizzy:
I use to eat a banana every single day and that always helped with the aching legs, the leg craps however now with the LC that isn't happening.. I take one potassium pill a day and no more crampy legs, or achy ones either... it will do the trick I am sure and make sure and drink the water water water and then some mo water....

Early stages of low carb, that isn't unusual as it has a strong dieuretic effect. Supps help! Potassium, as others have suggested is one. I believe I've also seen Zinc, Magnesium and Calcium suggested for this. This is in the Atkins book I'm pretty sure. So make sure your supps have the minerals in there and it should help.

I did have these early on, and they did go away as I increased my supps. Post-induction, most people don't report it continuing...

i'm not sure about the difference between cramps and aches, although if both of you are suffering from it simultaneously, it certainly makes sense to look at factors you both share currently.

on the supps, what's in different ones will vary, so you have to check and see on what you're taking.

I would advise you both to check with your health care provider. Cramps are one thing, but what you're describing sounds a lot more like peripheral artery disease (PAD).

PAD is not caused by a low carb lifestyle. Indeed, low carbing is often recommended as part of the treatment regimen for PAD. However, PAD is often "discovered" when folks take on a lifestyle change that involves an increase in exercise. The problem was there, but the individual had not been doing enough walking to experience the symptoms.

Please do not mis-understand. I'm not trying to diagnose anything here. I'm simply urging you to consult your health care professional to try to find out what's causing the leg pain.

Yes, there can be many factors with leg pain. I have had leg ache in past where it felt like my bones hurt and it turned out I had low ferritin levels.

The first two weeks (today, yeah!) I have had to take potassium, and a balanced Cal/Magnesium supplement for leg pain & cramp. (I am under Dr. Supv and she RX'd the potassium as I was low even before LC)

If you take thyroid remember you must take calcium 4 hours away from last dose or you will have absorption problem.

Thanks all, leg aches stopped now. Just a little cramp at night so adding potassium.
I used to drink diet tonic too but they have taken the quinine out so I don't think it works anymore.

So glad you found some relief. I take my mag/cal every day w/2 meals so when I start getting cramps I know its time to take a potassium (like this am) which usually comes when i have a whoosh...loss of fluid & weight.

I recently have had lower leg pain again that wouldnt go away with the usual culprits like potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium....so had my ferritin levels checked and lo and behold were low again. Doc put me on a RX'd form of iron which must be taken under a Dr. Supv as too much iron is just as bad, and within 3 weeks the horrible leg ache is gone.

Because of my past experience with low ferritin I knew to ask about it so the NP was willing to do the test and provide treatment when the results came back at the low end of range.

I had been exercising alot using treadmill so I thought at first it was related to exercise and weight loss but not in this case.

Boy, did I find this thread interesting.

I've been doing low carb for about a week and a half now, and until today, really wasn't doing any exercising at all (too busy sitting at the puter doing LC research ).

For a few days (except for last night), my ankles and legs would ache when I'd get into bed at night. I had no clue what was causing that, and didn't even give a thought to this new way of eating. I think it's time for some vitamin supps, and a potassium supp too. Sure couldn't hurt anything, especially at my young age.

Thank you all for hopefully solving the mystery.
