Default Ketosis, yet gaining?

I've been on Induction since May 16th. So far I'm down around 11.5 pounds. I WAS down about 14.5 pounds, but then all of a sudden I started gaining. This happened after I changed my breakfast routine.

I was doing eggs and bacon or something similar. Then I found a recipe for a almond mocha egg creme shake. Tried it. It was delicious and QUICK! Which was what I was looking for in the mornings (I have class full time, clinical rotations, and a part-time job..I'm SUPER busy!)

Well a few days after this I noticed I'm gaining, but I'm still in ketosis. Also still not exceeding my 20g of carbs per day. I HAVE lost another inch off my thighs though, but GAINED an inch in my stomach. Ugh. I don't get it.

Any advice?

Hi Riley,
As I stated in your Hello Everyone thread, it may be time for you to leave induction and move on into OWL. This helps in several ways:
~ gives your body more fuel to function on...and yes, that really can help you to start losing again.
~ prevents boredom and adds more variety to your meals and snacks.

Often times it's really better to stick to *real food* and avoid shakes and so called meal bars and other substitutes. Real food fills you up, and you know exactly what you're getting, yanno? What's the carb count on your creme shake?
Also, daily up and down blips on the scale can occur while being in ketosis. If the scales are dictating your mood, and sabotaging your efforts, it may be time to consider going to weighing in just once a week.

The egg creme shake I make is homemade. I got the recipe off another low carb site. It says it is 6g net carbs per shake. It has brewed coffee, 1/4 cup cream, 1/4 cup egg beaters(I dont like using raw egg but you can do that too), protein powder(plain, no sugar added), 1 Tbsp cocoa, some almond extract, and some sf chocolate DiVinci flavoring. Mix with ice and blend.

I only drink one in the morning and then do low carb clean eating (salad veggies and meat) the rest of the day.

I just don't understand why this would keep me from losing, if I'm still staying under 20g carbs, and still in ketosis.

Personally, I really, really think you should increase your carb level, as per Dr Atkins instructions in DANDR. Those 5gms of extra carb in the form of veggies or a few nuts, may really help you break through this. Remember, the longer you stay extremely low on carbs, you could be slowing your metabolism down to a crawl.

good luck.
over and out

I'd like to see a sample of your meals.

Do you have any underlying conditions, ie thyroid, adrenal, hormone issues?

I work in a hospital lab as a medical technologist, so I ran all my own labs prior to starting this way of eating just to make sure there WERE no underlying conditions.

My thyroid is fine, my adrenals are fine. The ONLY thing I could think of is that I do take testosterone hormone every 2 weeks, by injection.

Sample menu for today:

B: 2 scrambled eggs with 2 strips bacon-water to drink.
S: cherry cream soda (1 oz heavy whipping cream, 1 oz sf vanilla extract, 1 oz DiVinci sf cherry syrup, 6 oz seltzer water, and ice...Blend in blender)
L: 1/2c-1c tuna salad (tuna, mayo, 1 hb egg, and a little dill pickle) and a small salad (1c. iceburg lettuce with about 1Tbsp ceasar dressing)
D: will probably be a baked chicken leg quarter with leftover sauerkraut.

Hormones can do it, definitely. Have you tested your hormone levels? Insulin levels? Do you have any symptoms of thyroid/adrenal...even with the test?

Couple of possibilities based on menu:

1. high sodium foods, pickle, saurkraut, bacon
2. not sure you get enough veggies or fat, especially of its hormonal
3. Do you eat bacon everday?
