If you've just started a low carb woe (way of eating) and are wondering what everyone means by references to "net carbs" - I can help!

Net carbs basically refers to the carbs that will "impact" your system when consumed. Carbs such as fiber DO NOT impact your insulin levels and simply "pass through" untouched and unused by the body so they don't "count" towards your daily total.

So, if an item has 10 carbs and 6 of these are fiber then you would have an item with only 4 net carbs.

10 total carbs - 6 fiber carbs = 4 "net carbs"

I hope this helps!

Good luck.

So, is there any way to get FitDay to caculate the "correct" carbs?

Hi -

Yes, Fitday does that.

If you look in the box that has the breakdown of fats, carbs, protein, etc. it will list "fiber" right under the listing for "carbs"

If you carbs are showing as say, 38 grams for the day and your fiber is listed as 15, that would mean your total "net" or "effective" carbs would be 23.

So, I was just wondering. Is it better to just count net carbs? Is this a better method?
