If you don't mind my asking, why are you a vegetarian ? Since you don't eat eggs I'm thinking it must be for humanitarian reasons ? If that is the case there's no point in trying to "convert" you. If it were for perceived health benefits, then I have a case as I am a reformed vegetarian myself. This would be a difficult WOE for a vegetarian since so much of the protein you eat is combined with carbs (i.e. beans, grains, etc.). While that can eventually come back into your diet (in more limited amounts) you would need to stick with cheeses and soy products, maybe whey ? for your protein. Your success would totally depend on your commitment to the Way Of Life, as it does with all of us, but you don't have the variety we enjoy. Sheri

Gee, There are several low carb plans geared toward vegetarians, but they assume you're NOT a vegan, as they include eggs, cream, and cheese. Check out the following: The Protein-Powered Vegetarian: From Meat to Vegetable Protein, by Bo Sebastian. IUnivers.com, Inc., 2000. The Schwarzbein Principle Vegetarian Cookbook, by Diana Schwarzbein, M.D., Nancy Deville and Evelyn Jacob Jaffe. Health Communications, Inc., 2000. The Soy Zone, by Barry Sears, Ph.D. Regan Books, 2000. (In this book Sears offers additional recipes for soy protein products.) The Schwarzbein Principle II —the “Transition”, by Diana Schwarzbein, M.D., and Marilyn Brown. Health Communications, Inc., 2002. (Schwarzbein’s newest work provides vegetarian adaptations and menu plans.) Obviously, low carbing implies a higher intake of protein than other ways of eating - and most of us find that we can easily get the protein we need from meats, eggs, and dairy. I wish you well as you explore vegetarian low carbing! Emelia "We can only learn to love by loving." - Iris Murdoch, Irish writer 294/208/174 since 25-Nov-01

Hi Mom8+8, I've been a vegan since I was about 6 yrs. old...no, my family was carnivorous. I could no more 'reform' to being a meat eater than change my gender! LOL! It's just not something I have ever desired. Thanks for your input, gee

Dear Emelia, Thanks for all the info. I'll check to see if I can find any of these at my library. It is very hard to eat enough protein...I am truly a carboholic!!!! I haven't gotten into Soy in the past and I really don't like tofu..but there are some other things I have tried that are ok. Unfortunately, alot of foods made for vegans look like meat... and I'm definitely NOT into that at all. But maybe these books will open my eyes to some new things. Thanks again, gee

I'm a vegetarian too and have been doing Atkins pretty successfully for the last couple of weeks. Please ignore the person who is asking for your reasons for being vegetarian, I must say that with all of the mass farming that's going on it has to be a healthier option to avoid having meat that is from animals which have been pumped full of god knows what. i think it takes a lot more discipline and guts to do low carbing the vegetarian way, and you won't be missing out on any nutrients providing you gobble down the veggies ( spinach for iron and calcium etc etc). If you eat no eggs I suggest having a flaxseed oil supplement for its omega content and just doing the vitamins as in the book. I get protein from a lot of sources, I do eat tofu but find that its not very nice unless it has been cooked just right. I also have a fair bit of cheese and have Quorn ( almost NO carbs), which I don't know if you can get but it's the loveliest fake meat about. (I know you're not into the concept of this but I find it very handy and it means my food is different all the time, I just see it as being another form of food that I like - trust me , I couldn't eat meat it repulses me). I found a vegetarian low card website but can't remember what it was just now, will post it when I find the address, it listed all the carb contents of all vegetarian proteins. Why don't you try putting soya or tofu into bakes in the oven? You can steam the veg and make a mushroom sauce and pour it over all the veggies and tofu then top with cheese and bake it until it's brown and cooked through. I adapt all sorts of variations on this and they make really good meals, plus you can have it cold for lunch. I also have bought the cookbook which has recipes for things like soups and i just adapt it to use vegetable stock.. endless possibilities, get researching!
