is it still possible for me to do a low carb diet? I have about 15lbs to lose...I don't eat fish either. Is it possible to live on just eggs and cheese for 2 or 3 weeks?Or what other foods are out there that I would be able to eat? Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Your right that your being vegetarian would limit your choices for your protein. Most vegetarians that I know depend on legumes and rice for their protein. Cheese is a limited item. hmmmm do you eat tofu? That would be something else you could try. The upside is you definitely won't have probs eating all your veggies! You have to decide if you can live off all your protein coming from eggs and tofu. I'm not sure how healthy that would be either, but I don't think it would be that bad unless you have problems with soy. Susan LC and feeling better every day! Atkins since 7/18/03 210/190/140

Amberleaf, You asked the questiong "Is it possible to live on just eggs and cheese for 2 or 3 weeks?" The answer to that is yes. Yet what you should have asked is "Is it possible to live on just eggs and cheese for the rest of your life? You have to understand that this is not a diet. This is a way of eating for the rest of your life. Once you lose the 15 pounds you wish to lose you will have to go to the next step of maintenance. Going back to eating the way you were before starting this WOE you will certainly gain back the weight you lost and maybe even more. Have you purchased the book? Have you done your research on what high protein vegetarian foods are available to you that are low in carb? To be quite honest with you, it will be much harder for you as a vegetarian to eat this way. Sorry if I sound a little harsh. Anik Stats 188/127/110

Hi Amber, I'm a vegetarian and have been on the diet/ WOL/ whatever you want to call it - for 3 weeks and lost 12lb. Are you in America? I don't know what the meat substitutes are over there but we have lots in the uk and they are mainly low carb. I eat a lot of quorn plus tofu eggs and cheese and am about to start having a few peanuts. I'm also finding it quite easy and am trying lots of recipes. The Atkins cookbooks have a lot of vegetable dishes in them so I tend to use some sort of meat substitute and do different types of vegies with them. For breakfast I have a 2 egg mushroom and cheese omelette ( only eating 2 eggs a day as well)then a quorn or cheese salad for lunch. I also snack on olives. I also adapt meals, i will get the recipe for roasted pepper soup for example and substitute the chicken stock for vegetable bouillon ( check carb count). In fact the last few weeks have made me try endless new recipes that I love and from having done this I now think that I could keep doing it in the long term. Be sure to get vegetarian vitamin supplements and also have a dose of flaxseed oil each day. I think believe everyone that thinks that Atkins is a meat eaters' diet is mislead. I found a website through google that was for vegetarian low carbers, so have a search and see what you can find. Oh and also for the record, cheese is meant to be limited, but I've been having more than recommended and it's not stopped me, just make sure you have plenty of legal veggies as they will make up the nutrients ( such as iron and calcium) that most people think are only in meat. Good luck! maybe we can get a big veggie thread on here in support of us! Hey, admin, give us a vegetarian section !!!! Trudie

Amber Have you read The Schwarzbein principle? Or Neanderthin, or other Paleo diet book. Perhaps one of these will be more suited to your choice. Rob

| ive heard of lots of vegetarians doing lc, and there are tons of recipes suitable for it. your ease will depend on what kind of vegetarian you are, certainly strict vegans who dont eat cheese or eggs are going to have a more difficult time than someone who only avoids meat products. im not vegetarian but i do eat a lot of non-meat dishes, simply because i dont like meat much, and have found it not too difficult to adjust my menu for these. i use tofu every so often, and a lot of egg dishes like chili rellenos and quiches. and cheese is a staple of my diet, i go way over 4 oz most days =) if you really have a difficult time with the variety, you can always do a little higher carb version and include legumes as soon as induction is over. they are way at the end of what to add back in during OWL, but sometimes adaptations have to happen to make this doable for us. and certainly once you reach goal and are maintaining for life, legumes and fruits and higher carb vegies can be included in your food plan in moderation.
