I picked up some LC candy yesterday. It said it had '.2 net effective carbs' after taking out the sugar alcohol carbs, etc. And I'm thinking hey, this is great. It was made with malitol and I know there is something about that. They are made by RussellStover if that helps.

Please tell me if these are okay to eat occasionally...going to the movies today and it would sure help keep me away from teh corn and candy there with sugar in it.

They have a laxative effect - especially if you eat more than one serving.

Other than that, sugar alcohols affect some people the same exact way sugar does. You'll have to test its own effects on your body.

by that you mean, it might set up cravings? Inhibit ketosis? Fat burning? Hmmm. That would make a difference, wouldn't it?

It's entirely possible.. If you're going to try them, make sure you don't introduce any other foods to your diet, until you're positive of their effect on you.

That makes it much easier to narrow down any problems.

They do seem to have that effect on some people!

Luckily I'm not one of them. I can eat one or two pieces, not get cravings, not stall my weight loss, and haven't ever TRIED to test the limits of where they might become laxative on my system!!

I eat a piece or two maybe 3-4 times a week. The rest of the time I forget I even have them stashed in the kitchen. Now THAT'S a first for the relationship between me and chocolate.....

Shrinky is right, you'll have to try them for yourself and see if they cause any problems.

If 2 pieces is one serving, I can have one serving. If I have a third piece, I'm not a happy camper.

Works like clockwork if you either forget your fiber supplement, or happen to not get enough fiber in from your regular foods.

Russel Stover and many other "low-carb" candy bars, including some by Atkins, are made with maltitol, a sugar alcohol that has a glycemic index that is nearly identical to pure table sugar. It can kick you out of ketosis and trash your diet. Some people report that they can eat them successfully. I'm not sure what that's all about. But I know that I can't eat them.

From what I've read on sugar alcohols, either your body DOES metabolize them like sugar, and you get the resulting insulin problems as if you'd eaten sugar, but NOT the abdominal difficulties; or it DOES NOT metabolize the sugar alcohols, and if you eat them in excess (which is what I'm not willing to explore!) then you DO suffer a laxative effect from them.

So I guess it boils down to either you can or cannot metabolize the stuff and if you do, it is no different than eating sugar.

I'm happy I can eat these and not cause cravings or other problems. I just don't overdo them. But then, I'm not TEMPTED to either!

I'd like to try the erythritol - I'm planning to buy some soon and give it a shake. Supposedly it does NOT get metabolized by most people and also does NOT cause gastric distress. And I also read that its characteristics are quite like sugar in that it gives the same volume, can be caramelized, etc.

It makes a really good candy bar that doesn't melt in your hand within .03 seconds, nor does it have a funny aftertaste.

Is this a product they're going to make available to the public?

I went overboard with these today, 4 pieces and I am still paying for it. Don't try them, it's not worth the bathroom trip(s) and the very painful gas!! But that's just my experience, YMMV!!!

Has anyone ever tried the SF jelly beans or gummi bears? I am more of a candy/sour candy person than chocolate. Are these worth the money?
