Hi everybody. I'm hoping I can get some help from you all. I have read Atkins book and I've been on Induction now going on my 3rd week. I have lost 10lbs. the first two weeks!! Yeah!! But now I have put back on 2 lbs.

My question is about 3x a week I go to Starbucks and order a Tall(which is the smallest size) Decaf Sugar-Free vanilla Latte made with Heavy Cream. Do you think that is too much cream? Beacuse I don't have it every day, my thought is I can make up for the other days of not having it. The amount of cream in the tall is approximately 1 1/2 cups. I hope this isn't stalling me. I was so excited the first two weeks, now after getting on the scale, I'm really beating myself up, wondering what is going on........

Anything is possible!!

You know, 3x/week may be a little too often for this treat. Especially if you're noticing a stall, or gain. I have a Grande breve (with half-n-half) latte w/SF vanilla once a week...if even that. Don't beat yourself up over it, though. You may want to try cutting it out for a week and see what the scale does!

It's all about finding out what works for you! No fair beating yourself up over that!!! Good luck!

Cheers!

The hardest thing, I mean the hardest thing for me to give up was my lattes. It wasn't the caffeine because I always ordered decaf. It was the whole package. A cup and a half of cream is 12 carbs (1 carb per Tbsp = 8 carbs per cup) which means you are probably going over your limit and out of ketosis 3x a week. If you are still staying under 20 carbs then it is probably the SF vanilla syrup. Each brand is different with regards to what they use for their sweetning agent. If you are maintaining the correct amount of carbs including the latte then I would try ordering it plain and adding your own Splenda packet and vanilla extract. You don't really know the exact amount of the SF syrup they are adding, plus I'm sure the syrup has all kinds of other junk in it which may also be causing you a problem. I had to bite the bullet and switch to an Americano with extra cream. Then I throw in (eat) one or two "tiny" bites of the Atkins choc mint Endulge bar to treat myself. Try writing down everything you are eating and drinking and post it here on the forum and maybe someone else will spot the problem area in your diet. Maybe it is something else. -----Here is my recipe for a yummy vanilla chai latte. I make one cup of chai tea using a chai teabag (many brands available at the grocery store), add a packet of Splenda, a dash of vanilla extract, a dash of white pepper (I like it spicy), and cream to taste. Since this is a little complicated for me at work, I make it at home and put it in a thermos cup. It ain't a latte but it sure is a nice substitute come afternoon.

This latte stuff can be tricky depending how they make it.

HOWEVER, if you are SURE they are using 1.5 cups of heavy cream in it (that's 12 oz. at 100 calories per oz.) then your latte is.....

1,200 CALORIES!!!!!

Not to mention 12-15 carbs.

I think I would skip it for now.

How close to goal are you? If you're within 20-30 pounds then these extra 1,200 calories, 3X a week may be causing problems.

You might consider changing to half'n'half. The calories are much less but the carbs slightly higher.

Satrbucks lattes are usually made with steamed milk not heavy cream. So unless you asked for heavy cream anf they charge you about $10 for it, it hasn't got cream or at least not 12 ounces. Here's a link that will let you make informed choices about what to have at starbucks. http://www.chowbaby.com/10_2000/fast..._nutrition.asp

According to this site a latte has whole milk and has 210 calories and 17 grams carbs. Not what you want on a low carb woe. But I don't know if this includes added sugar or not.

Hmm I thought Starbucks just used half-and-half, not heavy cream. Well learn something new every day!

Yes, I would suspect that is too much cream - Starbucks' espresso drinks are "supersized". So your 12-oz beverage probably only contains 1-2 oz. of espresso and 1 oz of syrup, leaving 9-10 oz. of heavy cream. So, that's a lot, and that could be interferring with weight loss.

I ask Starbucks to make me a "very short breve cappuccino", which contains much less half-and-half than their normal portion. I try to coach them so that the whole drink comes out to about 4-5 oz. (they always want to give more unless I stop them).

Sometimes, when I can see I'm confusing the counter person with my order, I just ask for an espresso macchiato breve, which is very short anyway (mainly just having the foam). Then I go and add the amount of half-and-half I want at the condiment bar.

Teel -

Yes, half n half is standard when you order a Breve. However, you can ask for your breve made with heavy cream but it's not what they standardly do.

I agree with you! Sometimes it's just easier to ask for a macc and then add your own extras. When will they put up a few low carb coffee drinks?!

Actually, one place has. The coffee place at Borders (at least the one I went to 3 weeks ago, had 2 low carb offerings. I was thrilled! I watched her make it and they were using DaVinci sf syrups. Very cool. Starbucks only has ONE sf syrup. They really need to get a clue.

I must admit, Starbucks isn't my favorite but it IS the coffee shop most easily found. So, I do find myself there sometimes.

When we were in Vietnam, we were walking down a street one day and happened upon a place called "Starblack" coffee. LOL! I took a picture. DH thought it was hilarious. Hey, I'll have to post that so you guys can see it...

BTW, I just bought a bottle of Torani SF vanilla syrup that was made with Splenda. I haven't tasted it yet but it sure surprised me to find they had changed their SF sweetner.
