I have found diet soda that I like, but I noticed it has aspartame in it. Is that allowed? Also, I am making decaf tea and sweetening each glass with a packet of Equal. Is Equal okay? Thanks, Regina -------------------------- 194/188/140 Life is better when you have friends to share it with!

Equal is Nutrasweet-aspartame. In some people aspartame can cause people to stall. It all depends on how your body reacts to it. I drink pepsi with aspertame and I am not losing as quickly as I would like so I am cutting waaaay down. ~Steph

I find that Equal (aspartame/Nutrasweet) triggers strong sugar cravings for me. I sweeten my tea, protein shakes, and decaf coffee with Splenda, which does not trigger cravings. Splenda is used in Diet-Rite and Hanson's diet sodas, if I remember correctly. Ilse 380/304.6(WW)/229.5(current)/154 5'7" "It's kind of fun to do the impossible" Walt Disney

| Everybody's unique. I consume vast quantities of aspartame and have lost a lot of weight doing it. It's cheap, I like the taste of it, and it's available in most commercial diet sodas, so it makes life easier if you can use it. ************** "Sometimes I think you have to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who the person is you're talking to. | Agreed. It's different for everyone. Some people actually have bad reacts (health-wise) when they eat aspartame and others don't. It's really a matter of how your body handles it. Try it out and see how it goes. If you're able to continue losing and don't notice any bad side effects then more power to ya! | In DANDR, Atkins doesn't recommend aspartame for two reasons, 1) it can cause sugar cravings, and 2) it is an "excitatory neurotoxin." A quick online search will find you plenty of people convinced that aspartame is to blame for all kinds of disorders. I avoid it because it makes me crave sugar like crazy. Splenda works for me. (Do you have a Food Lion near you? The house brand diet drinks have Splenda/sucralose and they're yummy and cheap) Maybe you could give up Equal for a week or two, then reintroduce it to see if you're sensitive to it? If not, run with it xoxo |

I never had much of a bad reaction to it, but as a sweetener in most things I don't much like the taste, so I don't buy Equal. I don't mind it in a diet coke every now and then - 'specially if it has a little rum in it. Maggie 5'1" ~~ Atkins since '98 (160)/Maintaining nicely (110) ~~ Redhead until further notice!

LOL@maggie - especially after the third one. I believe DR A. said that 25% of people respond to aspartame as if it were sugar. I guess raising insulin levels. since this wol is all about insulin control be wary. I went back to saccharine believe it or not. They have a liquid that's not bad in coffee if you don't like a lot of sweetener. Too much and it's horrid. Luckily I used 1/2 tsp of real sugar in coffee when i used to use it. Rob

Another sweetener is Stevia, if you can handle the taste which I can. I use both liquid (in tea because the powdered makes it milky, yuch) and powdered (for coffee). kateryna apr-15-03 226/202/126 You can only be young once, but you can be immature forever!
