I have read that you count yogurt carbs different than regular.

I found a no sugar added (sweetened with Splenda) fruit yogurt at Walmart. It's Blue Bunny brand and says there are 13g of carbs in the whole 6oz container.

It also says Attention Diabetics: This product contains Carbohydrates naturally occuring in milk and fruit.

Dietary Exchange: One 6oz cup = one fat free milk exchange.

Can anyone tell me how to count this for my daily carb count?

This will be good for later phases of Atkins, but is not allowed during induction. As for your question, all 13 carbs need to be counted.

    Hi Betty,

Here is a link that might help you:

    As with everything, YMMV.

The Blue Bunny Lite-85 yogurt equates to approx. 4 net carbs per container. However, not suitable for induction, and should be added later, after you've added more quality veggies.

Thank you, I'm a couple weeks past induction.

Yogurt was always one of my favorite treats before lcing. Being able to have it keeps me from feeling deprived.

Becky, that's a great article, thank you.

Shrinkydink, that helps a lot, thank you.

I guess the theory is that the live cultures (Live is what you want) eat the sugars. I am hoping the labels don't take that into account, because the nutrition labels I have seen show full carbs and full sugar content (Basically the same as regular milk). Having said that, I do have it occasionally since I enjoy it. I prefer plain, whole milk yogurt. I add flavored syrup, or fresh (approved) fruit , or whatever else I want.

The reason I go for whole is that I prefer the creamier texture. Also, (per the USDA site at least) Whole milk yogurt has about the same calories as low fat. It has less protein, and less sugar. I get enough protein already.

I switched to kefir almost two years ago and absolutely love it. I have it plain; or make a smoothie with flax meal, SF coconut & Davinci syrup. The kefir has a lower carb count and lower glycemic index for most.

Visit our Caveman Forum for detailed info. Lots of kefir enthusiasts hang out there!

You know, I've wanted to try kefir for a while, but... Maybe next time I go to the store.

This was taken from the Low Carb Luxury websit. It is a product review of the Blue Bunny yogurt, it is very informative.

    Product Recommendation & Review:

If you thought being on a low-carb diet meant you really couldn't have yogurt any more, think again! Recently, Blue Bunny introduced their line of Lite 85 Yogurt –– a delicious little treat that comes in 19 Flavors and is now sweetened exclusively with Splenda ! Before you look at the label that shows a carb count of 14 per serving, check out our article on The Yogurt Exception that explains that while they legally have to list the carbs that way, the truth is these little paks come in at about 4 carb grams per serving. If you doubt it (and I am a doubter so I had to check it myself), I and two other group members put ourselves into a very deep ketosis (no other carbs for the day) and ate three yogurts. We all remained in the same level of ketosis over the next 12 hours. Having succeeded in our experiment, we now feel confident recommending these yogurts because they are just fab!

Thank you Becky for pointing me to that site.

I think there are some differences between how different people metabolize yogurt. I get the same blood sugar rise from yogurt as I do from plain whole milk. Both unacceptable.

I have a much more modest reaction to kefir, and suspect that is because, due to the larger variety of microbes involved, more lactose is converted to lactic acid. (Luckily, I love it!)

    YMMV!

I don't believe the Low Carb Luxury site on this. Their main source of info on this is the author of The Go Diet, a low-carbing diet book that suggests eating a lot of yogurt by claiming that yogurt's carb numbers are lower than the package label says. I did some research on it and don't believe it.

I really appreciate all the help on this subject.

I just really wanted my yogurt and so I decided to give it a try and see if it would knock me out of ketosis. I ate two of the Blue Bunny yogurts yesterday and I'm happy to say I'm still in ketosis. So I guess I happen to be one of the lucky ones who can handle it.

Thank you all so much for your advise and help. This is a great group of people.

Hi, I am new to this site. I post on www.everythingatkins.net and www.lowcarbfriends.com. I first found out about yogurt as being low-carb on Low Carb Friends. There are a ton of people that are actually losing weight easier and better when eating yogurt. I passed that info on to my friend at Everything Atkins, and now there are many posts there of people reporting good losses eating yogurt. I am also doing well with eating yogurt.
