Dr Atkins suggest taking 4 multi Vitamins a day in his book. Is that just during induction or forever? Do most of you take 4 multi vitamins a day? If so do you take them through out the day or all at once?

I don't have my copy here in front of me, but isn't he suggesting taking four of HIS vitamins a day??? Not just *any* multi-vitamin, right?

You should **NEVER** take four multi-vitamins in one day!!
Vitamin toxicity is very real and in America, we are already at risk for it because our foods are all *supplemented*.
I do believe in taking a multi-vitamin while eating this way, but four would be overkill.
Can someone verify?
Is he talking about *his* vitamins???
^Sheesh^ I need to go back and read the book again; it's been too long!

Yes, he's talking about his "Basic" series of vitamins.

Waste of money, IMO. I've done fine taking One A Day WeightSmart (has extra vitamin supplements in it), and 3 fiber caps a day.

I think you'd be fine with just a good, over-the-counter multivitamin; and, perhaps a calcium/magnesium supplement.

As Summer points out, doubling up on multi-vitamins can lead to an overdose. I think vitamin A, Iron, and one of the B-complex vitamins are toxic in high doses.

Anecdote - My friend's mother has some permanent numbness in her hands do to taking too much of one of the B-complex vitamins. Apparently, it caused some nerve damage. Of course, she thought she was doing a good thing at the time.

Anyway, stories like that make me very cautious about taking a lot of the new supplements promoted as beneficial to weight loss. I'm especially leery of the newer ones, which are probably not as well understood in terms of drug interactions and safe upper limits.

The FDA put far fewer controls on substances sold as food supplements instead of being sold as drugs (which is what they really are, in a sense).
