I was brought up by parents who were strict enforcers of the Pritikin diet. This is a diet that is almost the opposite of the LC woe. It's dry pasta, baked potatos, no red meat, no oils of any kind, but all the bread and fruit that you want.Skim milk and no-fat this and that. Being brain washed into this way of thinking, i always cut out fat to diet. I could lose some weight but could never get down to that "college" weight. After my mom passed away i said f- this. My mom loved steak and eggs but never ate it and see where it got her. So i turned to LCing on the advice from a friend. Since i never was allowed and felt guilty to eat the foods like mayo, steaks and eggs, i felt like a pig in you know what. this woe is awesome. please don't be fooled about negative pr. My dad is all worried about my cholesterol, so i had it tested and it's lower now than it was before i started(190 vs.175). My dad is thin and always has been, it just wasn't working for me. I started 8/1/03 and lost 26lbs. I have not left induction because this is too easy for me for reasons stated above. will continue this woe for life.

Wow, Crush! You've done really well - I think losing 26 lbs in 2 and a half months is awesome! Actually, from what I've read here, men do even better with low carb diets than women (makes us a bit jealous, in fact, LOL!)

At this point, I think you'd be well off to start adding carbs back and moving into Pre-maintenance. The Atkins book doesn't recommend staying on induction levels indefinitely. The book suggests adding back about 5 additional grams of carbohydrate daily each week until your weight loss stops. At that point, drop back 5 grams to continue losing.

You can read more about Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) and Pre-Maintenance at:How to Do Atkins (Atkins.com)

Congrats! And ditto Teelbee.

2 months is plenty long enough on induction. From personal experience, I would immediately begin upping the good carbs (such as veggies and nuts) and slowly increase them. You don’t want to make yourself carb sensitive.

Great job!

Crush... I actually want to congratulate you on a bigger picture - getting beyond the subtle pressures that our families can have on us - and making a decision that is best for YOU!! My parents are also very healthy and trim and my Dad in particular was very much NO FAT for a long time... My sister went the vegetarian route but my brother and I both tried hard to stay "healthy" and have both suffered for it - both with weight issues and for him Type 2 diabetes. I felt it took a lot of strength to break away from that whole thing and go low carb (which for the brainiacs in the family was like the white trash diet - Atkin's books in the K-Mart and all).

AND....> Now they are ALL on the bandwagon - they saw what happened to me, and began to read and - lo and behold - all of a sudden Duke and Harvard have bought in so it made it suddenly legitimate - imagine that!

I guess what I'm saying is that it takes some strength to swim against the family tide. They may not realize it - but the pressures to conform within the family unit are great and when we don't it takes a certain toll on us as well.

Many congrats!

Hugs,
Rachel
