Hi all: This is my 1st post here -- I love this site! As of tomorrow, I will have survived week 2 of induction, love the stabilization of blood sugar, and intend to stay in induction for a while since I have a significant amount to lose. However, I have a pet peeve and need to know if this is "normal": I smell because I am suddenly sweating buckets, even when barely moving, and not exercising. It's very strange, and my sweat smells like (excuse me, all of you weaker-stomached folks) grotesque beef broth. Just need to know, have others experienced this? Will this too pass,or should I prepare to limit myself socially?

*just about dies laughing* I'm not sure what grotesque beef broth smells like, but I'm not sure I want to know, either.. You can help by drinking lots, and lots, and lots of water. The more water you think, the less strong the ketosis "odors" are. I would assume you're definitely in ketosis. (296/223/135) 04/01/03 The Downward Spiral Begins

I haven't noticed the horrible odor....well except breath-wise. One thing I have noticed is that I sweat easily. I used to be able to work out and not sweat. I could go for a walk in the 84 degree heat and not sweat as long as it wasn't humid. One thing my DH has noticed is that I'm always warm, not feverish, just warm. I just chalk it up to my metabolism going so much faster than it was when I was on a low fat diet. Cheers! Jen Started Atkins 5.5.03 196/181/155

I'm afraid I have noticed an odor. I drink as much water as possible in hopes of being "socially acceptable". And if you find you must limit yourself socially (that cracks me up!), you've got us right here. Good luck! Sus 450/420/200 5'8" Feelin' fine since 8/10/03

| Ditto the above. It's normal. Drink alot of water and rejoyce in the fact that you are DEFINATELY burning fat! One caveat though, don't stay in induction for too long. Say, a month max. You can cause your body to be extra sensitive to carbs and thus make it more difficult to add even healthy carbs back in later. | I've read quite a few posts that report changes in breath and body odor. The main remedy is to drink more water. You might try switching to a deoderant with baking powder in it. I think Arm and Hammer makes a good one. I sweat more than previously, and my sweat seems to react with my skin -- causing a burning sensation on my face. Now that I'm in maintenance, it isn't as pronounced, but still more than before. After vigorous exercise, my face burns (stings) and is as red as a tomato. My skin is slightly puffy like when you have a sunburn. People think I'm having a stroke, but I feel fine and I'm not even that breathless. In an hour or so, it fades to normal. I have read that epileptic children on a ketogenic diet (diet helps control seizures, apparently) often have a flushed face, so I related my symptom to being in ketosis. Now, I don't want to scare anyone off. I think my skin reaction is unusual. The Atkins Center said they were unaware of this side effect. So, it could just be a coincidence that I perhaps developed a slight case of acne rosacea about the same time I started low carb eating; and that my trigger is exercise. I don't have bumps (thank goodness!); but it is apparently common for people in my age group (50+) to develop rosacea. ~~~Teelbee 174 (Mar. 2002, highest weight), 164 (Jan. 2003, begin LC) 164/133/137-134 remember, amateurs built the Ark, professionals built the Titanic |

Teelbee, that sure does sound like rosacea. I developed it when I started having hot flashes two years ago, and a heavy-duty flash or exercise will cause the same reaction for me. I just tell people that my inner child is playing with matches! Amazon 289/263/180 6'1" amazon, large frame with too much padding, size 11 shoes, gonna get gorgeous!

I too realized about the breath odor. Does large consumptions of water help this?? Also, Since I went hypo I have the Rosacea on my face. My dermatolgist prescribed a medicine called Triluma that will help lighten the skin. Haven't tried it yet but we will see.
