An occasional treat in very small quatities (1/4 cup). Since it is refined more than brown rice it can spike you blood sugar and trigger some cravings.
Make sure you are well into OWL before partaking of the rice since the carb count is relatively high.

I have heard Sharron Long, et.,al., talk about a recipe for "rice-a-flower" -- a rice substitue made from cauliflower that a lot of people seem to like.
Why don't you post this question in our cooking forum and see if you can get some ideas there?

As for eating REAL rice, if you have a significant amount of weight to lose (or if you are still on induction), I wouldn't do it. It's pretty starchy and can bring on serious cravings.
But if you are close to goal and on OWL (ongoing weight loss), and you absolutely MUST eat the real thing, try to stick to either:
**Uncle Ben's Converted White Rice
or
**real (not quick-cooking) BASMATI rice.

These two rices (for whatever reason) are considerably lower on the glycemic index than other rices. This means that they will not raise your blood sugar as much and are less likely to cause insulin spikes.
Even so, this is for that *rare* treat.
But do check out our cooking forum; you'll get lots of help there, too!
HTH,

Summer

I do only treat myself to just a small amount, otherwise I feel so guilty. I will check out the cooking forum that is a great idea. I think that my biggest downfall is when I am at that special time of the month and cannot control myself and of course I crave rice and fresh fries.

Polinia... I would just kiss rice goodbye.

I guess there might be ways to limit the damage it does, but it's totally at odds with this way of eating. Rice is a very high-carb, very high-glycemic food. There are a number of diets that recommend rice but it just isn't very compatible with low-carbing.

I use cauliflower as a substitute for rice and potatoes.

I just tried "mashed cauliflower" last night. Microwave it for a few minutes and take a potato masher and mash the heck out of it. microwave some more with lots of butter, then mash some more. Add a dollop of sour cream, shredded cheddar, and maybe some chives? oh yeah...salt and pepper, too. TO DIE FOR!! it'll make a cauliflower lover out of anyone! And is a perfect side dish in place of potatos or rice.

Rice doesn't affect me much, I don't crave it but there is this great thai restaurant across the street from my work that has great yellow curry - one of my favorites, and in the two months I have been lo carbing, I have been there twice (as opposed to almost every week) the first time I ate all the rice they put on my plate (I think at least 1-2 cups) the second time I decided I needed to do it differently and ordered a green salad to go with my meal and when they brought out the rice, I put half on another plate, (my lunch mate put it in her soup). I make sure it isn't right next to my weigh in date, and drink plenty of water after that lunch..My cravings after eating that were nill, so either I have my cravings under control, or it doesn't affect me that way.

My non-LC husband is nuts about it.Marcie's Cauli Mash

I made the "deluxe" version of cauliflower rice in Dana Carpenter's book a few times, and that was very well received, too.

Wild rice is about half the net carbs of white short grained rice (16 g vs. 29 g for a 1/2 cup). So, a quarter cup of wild rice once in a while might work.

I love cauliflower, I am going to give this recipe a try in fact my mouth is watering right now and its not even lunch time.... Thank you all so much for the support I was starting to think that I was the only nut out here until I join this web support site. My husband and kids think that I’m a nut. I have lost 10 pounds but it really has become a challenge to loose the rest.

Carolyn,

My local Chinese food place has a curry that I die for, chicken curry with onion. I was afraid to try it, even after induction, because I didn't know how many carbs a Chinese curry would be likely to have. Any ideas?
