What's the scoop on iron and Atkins - it's said that you should find a supplement with no iron. Is that because the increase of red meat will provide sufficient iron? I know that iron overdose can be a problem, but it's my understanding that it is not typically a problem for menstruating women, due to iron loss through blood. Anybody know if there's a distinction between men's and women's iron intake on Atkins, or any info on why to find a no-iron multi?

Some people get constipated while doing Atkins or Low carbing...and Iron can cause Constipation also...So Im sure that is why they say No iron...Plus Im sure with all the meat, nuts, egg etc. there is more than enough iron in all of that?? Just my 2 cents

Yes it's the increase in red meat consumption.
We generally get enough iron from a low carb diet that it's possible to get too much, even for menstruating women. But you know how much and what you're eating so you can go by your best judgment. It's been recommended by some low carb plans that men donate blood regularly to relieve the iron buildup.

Iron is something which humans need, but in varying amounts depending on age and other circumstances. This way of eating does tend to be high in foods with easily absorbable iron, so most people won't need supplementation.

This NIH site gives, I think, a pretty balanced presentation of both iron deficiency and iron build up.

    Iron supplementation

Hope this helps you make a decision on iron supplementation.

please also remember that if you use cast iron skillets to cook with you are also getting iron there.... it leaches out into the food cooked in them.... having gone thru chemo and was very anemic (sp) for about 4 months and needing transfusions, I was already eating much red meat before starting on this way of eating....
you don't want to get too low on iron (iron poor blood - very tired all the time, verry verry tired....)
