| A standard apple is about 15-20 grams. You could try cutting it in thirds and treat yourself to a small piece 3 times a week. But not 3 days in a row. Just make sure you rub the cut surface with lemon juice to minimize oxidation, wrap it up, and keep them in the frig. The main point is to not be eating 15-20 grams of carbs all at once. That would likely cause too high an insulin spike but 1/3, at around 5-7 carbs, wouldn't be so bad at all. Worth a shot! | When You increase your carbs a bit more you can probably incorporate 1/2 an apple into your eatingplan. But marcie's advice will probably suit you better. I allow myself half an apple or half a pear a couple times each week as a snack but my ccll is 50 grams carb. choose smaller fruit though, some apples are pretty huge. I core and weigh my apples or pears and have 3 ounces or less on average. This is a little less than 10 ecc. A little high but it's apple season and I intend to enjoy it while it's here and they're cheap. Rob 310/243/180 |

| Marcie's advice was excellent. If you can't feel satisfied with a third or half of an apple or a pear, you should probably avoid it altogether. But if you can, then go for it. And it is best to combine it with other, heavier foods, during a meal rather than eat it by itself as a snack. I mince a third of an apple and put it into my tuna salad. It adds a nice texture and flavor to it. ************** "Sometimes I think you have to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who the person is you're talking to. | Melon is another handy fruit alternative. 1/2 cup of cantaloupe or honeydew is about 7 carbs. I like the sweetness. Barb L. Started Atkins January 2003 162/141/130 |

| Lisa~ I'm wondering if your new way of eating may have calmed the diverticula enough that you might not have the same problems with berries any more? Just a thought - I'm not advocating that you eat something you know disagrees with you, but maybe things have changed in your system? There are some pretty amazing stories out there of low-carbers recovering from IBS and other significant digestive troubles. From my own experience, I know that eating this way can immediately and permanent eliminate serious GERD symptoms. Maybe it can help in your situation, too?
