I am doing Atkins but in addition I am trying to keep calories under 800 with carbs around 10 to start, I am modifying what I was going to do and limiting myself to one atkins bar per day instead of 2 just in case the bars prevent a good loss. I am really excited to have people with experience to help me past the parts where I am not sure what to do. Thanks!!!!

Joanee,
If you are just starting out I wouldn't eat those bars yet. Especially, one a day. Save them for when you are craving something really bad.

Joanee...

I'm afraid you may shoot yourself in the foot in trying to do Atkins and keep under 800 cal/10g carb per day. Sounds like you need to get a copy of the book and read it cover to cover.

Start with this from Atkins website:
http://atkins.com/Archive/2001/12/15-325810.html

In trying to restrict your caloric intake, in my opinion, you will have intense hunger and cravings and it will be very difficult to stick with this way of eating. Just ask anyone here if they worried about calories or fat intake while on induction! No way!

The bars are a crutch. I would avoid them during induction at least.

Joanee, I think you are doing your body a grave injustice by restricting your carbs to 10 and your calories to 800. What is your body going to use for good fuel? Bars are definitely not for induction.

You are only allowing yourself half of the recommended carb allotment for induction. You should have around 20 carbs daily during induction.

You should not be worried about counting calories in the least during induction.

Please re-think your plan. Get the book and read it cover to cover.

Take care~

Joanee,
Veronica, Kumus and Tara are all correct. The bars are a bad idea when you first start and restricting your carbs and calories so severly is not healthy. In fact, I think it's dangerous. There's no way you can be getting your 3 servings (minimum) a day of veggies or other essential nutrients.

Sorry if we sound like we're "jumping" on you, but we're all very concerned about your well-being.

Always eat your veggies first!

Thank you all so much for your input and perhaps I should rethink what I am doing. The problem for me is that I only eat lettuce, tomatoes and carrots for veggies..I just can't seem to eat the other green veggies. I also eat mostly chicken, rarely beef. I lost weight when I was much younger in a hospital fast but I know I did not learn eating properly that way, but I did lose the weight. That is why I thought the bars would be good and since they are listed as ok for phase I....since I am such a weird eater :-), I thought it would not hurt; but then I started reading about metabolism of glycerine, etc and did not know what to do. I will give it much more thought and reread my book, the calorie limit was to assure weight loss because I don't want to not lose and get discouraged. I also used to say "oh one day won't hurt", like holidays, but I realize I will need to stay LC because once I start eating many carbs I go nuts and can't get enough to eat. Sorry, I am just weird!!

Joanee:

YOU SHOULD NOT BE DOING A DIET THAT IS UNDER 800 CALORIES A DAY WITHOUT BEING CONSTANTLY MEDICALLY SUPERVISED.

AND FRANKLY, I DON'T THINK YOU SHOULD BE DOING SUCH A DIET AT ALL.

We cannot help you with an 800 calorie a day diet.

Joanee,

You need to educate yourself a little more about human physiology!
You will NOT *ensure weight loss* by eating only 800 calories a day!
The only thing you will *ensure* is that you will lose muscle tissue, which will lower your metabolism and ultimately make your weight loss come to a stand-still. It's called STARVATION MODE. Once the body thinks it is starving, it shuts down all of its calorie burning and *maintains* on the bare minimum of calories.
If you do this sort of *crash diet* enough times, you will destroy your metabolism and then you will struggle with your weight for the rest of your life. PLEASE, don't shoot yourself in the foot!
Also, you obviously have NOT read the book or you would know that 10g carbs and 800 calories goes against everything Atkins teaches.

I implore you to listen to those of us who have been doing this a while (and had great success with it! ).
READ THE BOOK. Educate yourself to the hows and whys of this woe (way of eating).
Give this way of eating a fair chance to work for you!
We are here if you have questions/concerns and we will support you any way we can.
But we cannot support what you are suggesting.
I truly wish you the best of luck,

Summer

I agree...

Try doing the diet the regular way first, just for a few weeks, and see what happens. You might find out that, like most people, you don't have to go to such extremes.

I'm not sure what phases the new version of the book says you can eat the bars. I think a lot of people here would advise you not to eat THEM AT ALL. They are a truly terrible example of false advertising. Each of those bars has about 15 grams of carbs in the form of sugar alcohols -- maltitol, in particular. They can throw you out of ketosis and totally sabotage you.

If You Must count calories on induction do not go below 1200. 1500 would be a better number. Trust in this woe and you'll find that your carb cravings cease and hunger won't be a factor and weight loss will ensue. Sounds good?
IT is! Try it, if it doesn't work you can always do what you want after that.
