A friend of mine sent me this link http://www.weightwatchers.com/util/a...v=health+ideas How do I begin to answer? I know how well I feel on a low carb diet vs any other plan I have tried and again it looks as if WW is downing the low carb way. I dont want to agrue with her but I do gently want to say something informative. Any helpers? Blessings, Carol **** Php 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (NKJV)****

Carol She has her beliefs and you have yours. Why not agree to disagree? Every other diet plan is Attacking low carb because it's so popular and so successful. If low carb proves to be the best plan then they are all out of business. So they fight dirty. Rob

Since she sent you a link... See the link for Low Carb Research at the top of the page? Check it out and send her a few links of your own. Other than that, like Rob said, I'd agree to disagree. Always eat your veggies first!

Hi Carol, Have you read Atkins' book or Protein Power? If you read these books, it arms you with the knowledge you need to counteract that kind of garbagy info. Knowledge is POWER!!!! The truth of the matter is this: Carbs and sugar increase our insulin levels which sets up a cascade of chemical AND molecular traps. (diabetes and high blood pressure) PROCESSED, SUGARY carbs are what does this to our bodies. The low-carb proponents constantly talk about the BAD carbs. They do not tell us to cut out ALL carbs. They say for us to consume GOOD carbs, ie, whole grains, nuts, vegetables, and low glycemic fruits etc. As for fats, they say to consume GOOD fats, ie, unsaturated fat, Omega 3 & 6 oils (which have been proven to be of the utmost importance to good health) As for protein, we NEED a certain amount of protein according to our body fat ratios or we will waste away our muscle tissue, both smooth AND rough. Smooth muscle is in our organs. Our organs require calcium. We get calcium from meat. Our organs will leach calcium from our bones if we do not eat enough proteins. And that sets us up later for osteoporosis. I have NEVER eaten so healthy now and have never felt better. I eat until I am satisfied, not stuffed. I snack on whole foods such as raw veggies and dip, nuts, ham on whole grain Wasa type crackers, etc. I haven't had ONE dorito or cookie since starting this WOL. What is so dang unhealthy about NOT eating doritoes? I gave up M&M's, sugar laden puddings, etc. I don't think anyone would argue with me that giving that stuff up is going to hurt my health. When your daughter is feeling better, get yourself Protein Power and read, read, read. You will then understand thoroughly what the garbage does to our bodies and why we are so much better off without that stuff. But then, you could also agree to disagree, Barb Atkins-3/14/03 174/146/135 "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing."

I have been on WW several times, but always gained the weight back, and was always hungry and cranky and craving sugar. I know it works very well as a long-term program for many people, but - in my opinion - it is disasterous for carb junkies. And I strongly agree with Rob, that as low-carb eating becomes more popular, the low-fat diet programs are going to fight tooth and nail to keep their business. If you read their arguments against low carb and increased fat intake, it is very clear that they haven't done their research. Staci

My response: Dear Friend, All doctors and nutritionists agree we should eat less pre-package processed foods, more fresh wholesome foods and more veggies. They also highly recommend we take our vitamins, drink plenty of water and get more exercise. It seems simple enough, but it is obviously easier said than done. The Atkins program gives guidelines and information to make it possible for me to achieve these things - not just in the short term, but for long term. Atkins has helped me learn to take care of my blood sugar levels in a way that I no longer have cravings for things I once thought I couldn't live without. The Nov/Dec 2003 issue of The Saturday Evening Post has articles on the Glycemic Index and Trans-Fats. That is goes hand in hand with what Dr. Atkins talked about. Recent studies are backing up Dr. Atkins research. See this link for more information: http://lowcarbeating.infopop.cc/6/ub...4&m=5856008354 Though some in the medical fields are resistant and/or uninformed about the facts of this way of eating, there are a growing number of doctors that support and recommend it to many of their patients, including diabetics and pre-diabetics. Contrary to the myths the diet community has spread about Atkins, this way of eating *will NOT cause* liver problems but it is not for anyone with existing liver problems. Again, the basic idea is the same as Weight Watchers. To eat fresh healthy food and to learn to eat for good nurishment instead of by emotions or habits. Whichever method works for us is fine as long as we are learning to take care of ourselves so we can enjoy our lives better. Thanks for thinking of me and for caring to send the information from Weight Watcher's, but please don't worry about the stories that go around about low carb diets. Many are well intentioned, though they are often misleading or uninformed. As healthy as I am on this and with the blessings of my own doctor, I need to stay with what works for me. Linda ................... Anyone may use in part or whole, quoted or as from yourself, or rewritten as you like. I tend to get a bit wordy. Instead of "with the blessing of" you could switch to "with the consultation of my own doctor" if he/she is reluctantly dragging their feet. You might want to leave out the liver problems part, but that's usually one of the first rumours people attack with. I have found when I talk about how my blood sugar levels react to certain foods, the glycemic index and my health, people take me more seriously than if I said I want to get into a size 10 again. I take me more seriously too! Try telling someone you aren't allowed to have a glass of orange juice. Now try telling them you'll have to pass because it spikes your blood sugar too quickly. When I eat orange slices again they'll be part of a meal so they won't have as much of an effect on me. Granted, most times you don't need to mention anything but there are some people who will question anything if they get wind that you're "dieting". It does pay to be informed. The articles in the current Sat Evening Post are what got me started in changing my approach to dealing with people. Linda

Excellent letter! IMHO.. WW is makeing a desprit attempt to keep ppl comming to them each week so they can collect ther 13.00 to 15.00 each visit (including weeks that you skip). I too have done WW with the Low fat diet. I WAS STARVING the whole time. How ever..my MIL had lost a ton of weight doing Low fat..but went back to her old eating habbits and gained most of it back. She tried doing LC and found it to limited for her. Another words she didn't do the induction like she should have and never rid her body of cravings, and didn't loose any weight. But now she's back on WW and has lost 9 - 10 so far. So for some WW works, but not for me. Tanya Member since Jan 2002 re-started on 1-3-03 272/185/172<--(next goal)
