Hi All

Just joined today.

Am trying to eat low carb - but man it is hard!

I have been hearing about GI index, and that you should be more concerned about that, than the total amount of carbs in foods you eat.

Can anyone tell me more about GI and maybe where I can read more about it?

Thank you.

Welcome, Kay.

You've found a great source of information and support. The glycemic index is a way of measuring the impact of various foods on blood glucose levels. A place to start is:

http://www.glycemicindex.com/

Some of us who monitor our own blood glucose levels have found that there are individual differences, but the GI provides a good "jumping off" place to begin to understand the concept.

Make yourself at home!

Welcome Kay!

The people here are a wealth of information and very helpful! You will find LCE a big help. Stay focused and the LC WOE (low-carb way of life) will get much easier. Eat a wide variety of food when you are at that stage - it will help also. GOOD LUCK!

Kay,

Actually, I have read up on the GI extensively and I have come to the conclusion that BOTH -- the number of carbs AND the *kind* of carbs -- are EQUALLY important.

I *reversed* my type II diabetes by restricting my carbs. Now that I am eating more carbs, the GI keeps my blood glucose levels in check by helping me to choose *better* carbs.

I strongly recommend that you get the book, The New Glucose Revolution by Jennie Brand-Miller, PhD., et., al.
While I find the authors' obtuse rejection of low-carb diets infuriating (and ironic -- based on their own comments!), the book is WONDERFUL for explaining the Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load and gives you wonderful food lists.
And it quickly becomes clear that "a carb is a carb is a carb" is NOT TRUE.

It's very easy to read and understand and I like keeping it on hand for a quick reference.

HTH,

Summer
