Hi
First off, I live in Ontario, Canada.
I was in a GNC store looking to buy some Atkins products. One item I was looking at was an Advantage Bar which stated on the front of the bar that it had 2g count. However when I look at the lable on the back it states Carbohydrates = 21g, Sugars = 0.1g, Polydextrose = 4.0g, Glycerin = 12g, Dietary Fibre = 0.2g.
How do they get 2g of carbs from this, the person in the store said that they measure carbs different in Canada.
So now I am really confused going shopping at the store, how do I know what is good and what is not?
Is there a book or a site which tells me what the carbs are in store bought product in Canada?
Any help would be great.
Thanks

Those crazy canadians at it again with their fancy carbo measurement systems again I see.

Actually, I don't know that they measure anything differently. I'm not sure of that however.

On the other hand, I am sure that you need to avoid those Atkins Advantage bars. They measure them correctly, its just that the official party line from Atkins is that the sugar alchols don't affect your blood sugar. Most people seem to have real life expierence that disproves that theory.

The answer to your question is that you take total carbs, subtract fiber content, and there you have your total carbs that you need to count.

The disagreement is whether you can also go ahead and subtract out the alcohols.

So, do yourself a favor and try to skip any premade prepackaged foods and stick to whole foods you prepare yourself for the first two weeks of induction.

Welcome, pbelanger.

Gyps is exactly correct. Glycerine and sugar alcohols DO impact the blood glucose levels of MANY people. The safest course, especially during induction, is to calculate your own net carbs by subtracting fiber from the total carbs and ignoring the hype on the front of the package. That leaves out most lc bars and sweets.

Those who "keep it real" have much better results. Later, during OWL, you can give various products a try, if you like, and see if they interfere with your progress.

There are hidden carbs in the low carb food products.

If you want an easy hidden carb calculator which opens with Excel, e-mail me and I'll send you one.

I live in Montreal Canada and we do not count carbs differently. We may use the metric system but a gram is a gram
