Hi everybody,

Does anyone have the carb count for All Bran?

Does anyone know if sugar free metamucil is o.k.? The Atkins site says the sugar free kind is o.k., but do you use it daily with that carb count? Does it count as four carbs per teaspoon? Help!

Thanks,

k.

hi K,

I don't have the counts for those. However.. I have tried physillium husks and it actually made me more constipated. I found out that the reason for this is due to it dehydrating the colon. I then tried Magnesium citrate which draws water into the colon keeping it hydrated and it works much much better.

As for the other stuff.. I know that others will be able to help you better than I can.

I don't han the carb count but this might interest you

Bran. Bran is sold as a panacea for all kinds of disease from coronary heart disease to varicose veins. Not so long ago bran, which is the outer husks of wheat and other cereals, was a worthless by-product of the milling industry. It was thrown away. Today it can be bought in health food shops, pharmacies and supermarkets at great cost. But bran is not a food; there is no enzyme in our bodies which can break it down. But that doesn't mean that it is harmless. Bran is quite unlike vegetable fibre in that it contains phytate. Phytate binds with a number of minerals and vitamins, so that the body cannot absorb them, and it also depletes the body of a number of minerals.
Another lucrative use that the manufacturers have found for bran is in the multi-billion pound slimming industry. Fibre tablets are sold as a slimming aid. One such tablet contains 0.2 g of bran and the dieter is instructed to take 5-6 tablets a day. She is told that the fibre will stay in her stomach and prevent her from feeling hungry. Let's examine the evidence. Firstly, the whole basis of the fibre hypothesis is that fibre goes through the gut faster; it does not remain in the stomach. Secondly the amount of fibre in 5-6 tablets at around 1 gram is about the amount of fibre found in one prune. But does it work? You won't be surprised that the answer is 'no'. A typical trial published in 1989 found that 'The effect of fibre was consistently not significant.' It went on: 'Although several mechanisms have been suggested by which fibre might work, none has yet proved acceptable.' It's hard to imagine that the eating of one prune a day would reduce hunger pangs significantly, either.

I use the S.F. metamucil. I don't have it right in front of me, but if I remember right the carbs are listed as 5 total, with 2 as dietary fiber and 3 as soluble fiber. It may be 2 and 2, I don't remember for sure, but I know it equals the total carb count.

Am I right that this makes the effective carb count zero?

Thanks,
Kevin

I was hopeful some other people might see this and answer - anybody?

Flaxmeal, IMHO, works wayyyyyyyyy better!!!! I put flaxmeal in almost anything (not drinks) like mock danish, flaxomeal cereal (recipe forum from top of page here) Drink LOTS of water with whatever fiber you chose to do. Fiber needs to be hydrated to do its job, or yep, you'll plug up the plummin' and have the opposite effect. Fiber keeps the plummin' hummin'. Are you eating enough veggies too?

Ms. Barb,

Where do you purchase Flaxomeal? I saw your breakfast cereal recipe in the recipe section and would like to try it.

I find mine at most grocery stores and health food stores. I think it's pretty much a staple that all stores carry. I have NEVER not been able to find it. Look for "Bob's Red Mill" Products and you most likely will find it there. They make a ton of different "milled" products.
