Yes.. it will slow down after induction. That is just how it is. You will run into stall and platue's (sp). Your body NEEDS those! How long it takes for you to run into those is really a YMMV type of thing. I think it will also benifit you to change your mind set about this WOE. If you think about quiting before you have even got past induction.. then your setting yourself up for failer. It is important to keep in a couple of things in mind... first..even IF you don't reach goal by next summer... at least your going to be smaller (and healthier) than you were this summer, and second.. you did not put on this weight over night.. it is NOT going to come off over night.

I know how badly you want this weight to come off... just try not to make common mistakes that ppl like me have made in the past.. (I.E....stay on induction longer than 2 weeks). It will serve no purpose but to make this WOE harder to stick with and will slow down your weight loss by makeing you to sensitive to carbs!

BTW.. welcome to the boards

Liz,
I think that there is a very good chance that you can be at your goal by this summer. it boils down to about 11 pounds a month. i would say be strict and stick to it, drink a gal of water daily, and start some daily exercise. be sure to keep your fat intake up too!

Keep up the good work!

lol liz! the formula is 1/2 your body weight in oz of water each day. 128 oz is gallon, so most just round up to a gallon. it's very important-it flushes the fat out! but a bathroom is important too! lol

Well IMHO.. this is the quickest way to take off weight outside of starving yourself or gastrail bypass (sp).

The water is a very essential part of weight loss on this WOE. Yes.. the bathroom breaks are bothersome (and some times difficult to come by)..but if you can get that much water down..then that will help your weightloss. Ppl have actually stalled there weight loss by not drinking enough.

Good luck to you!

It took you longer than one year to put it on... Just work hard...drink lots of water and exercise you'll make it!!! And dont try to stick with induction to long because your thinking if I say LOW LOW carbs it will come off faster..it WONT! It will cause the opposite and you will become carb sensitive! SO after induction add your 5C a week...and LOTS of water!!! Till you could float away!!!
Good Luck and Stick with it!!! You can do this!!!

Hi Liz

I hate to tell you this but I must. There is little chance you’ll make that goal.

Why?

TONS of reasons.

1) As said above, it took longer than 6 months to gain so you can’t expect to lose it in a few months. When you spend time being very overweight, you damage your metabolism and that takes time to heal. Very often this damage can dramatically slow your weight loss.

2) The holidays. I know, many people do just fine being low carb during the holidays but frankly, this is a VERY tough time of year for ANY dieter.

3) Stalls and plateaus. They happen, no way around it. I stalled for 3 weeks after finishing induction. I wasn’t doing anything wrong and was eating the same way I had been. It’s just one of those things. Your body likes taking a break now and then and you can’t put it on a schedule and say “you must lose X amount of weight by such and such time” – your body isn’t going to listen! It does what it wants. LOL

4) Experience. I’ve been doing this since 2001 and I’m still not at goal. In fact, I’m 40 pounds heavier now that I was at this time last year. It’s a real battle and while some people find it very easy to just drop the few pounds and continue on with life, I venture to say that most of us on this site have various food issues which complicate matters greatly.

I’m not trying to discourage you, just the opposite in fact. This is THE BEST way to eat I know of and I continue on my path no matter how many mistakes and screw ups I make and no matter how long it’s going to take for me to hit goal. I absolutely feel better eating this way and will continue for the rest of my life.

HOWEVER, training yourself to have an entirely different RELATIONSHIP with food is very difficult. I started out at around 240ish myself several years ago and while I’ve been able to keep off the first 40-50 pounds I lost for about 5 years, I’m having real trouble with this last 40ish. I hit a new low this time last year and then gained 20 pounds on vacation over new years. Got back and gained ANOTHER 20 pounds because 3 weeks of carbing out in Europe got the best of me. I’ve spent ALL THIS YEAR trying to get serious enough to get this 40 pounds back off and finally hit goal but as of yet, I haven’t.

It’s a process, a journey, a learning experience. Trust me, it’s WAY MORE than simply eating differently. It’s a matter of THINKING differently and changing your emotional responses to life and the stressors it provides.

Please, don’t set yourself up to be disappointed by setting unrealistic goals. Based on my (and others of this board) experience, I would say 5 pounds a month is quite realistic. I would shoot for that and then be super happy if you do better.

Good luck

Well Liz, why don't you decide to stick with it until next summer and see where you are then instead of deciding that you are going to fail at it. There are also lots of people on this site who don't have a problem sticking to this WOL and are losing their excess weight slowly but surely. I'm just one of those people who won't eat regular bread, white rice, pasta, white potatoes, or sugar-laden things ever again, no matter how good some people think those things are. I know that they are not good for people who have a problem with starch like I now know I do.

Joyce
60 lbs gone in less than a year and never deviated from the plan since July of 2002.

It can happen.

I will also add that even though my weight loss has slowed down, my clothing size continues to shrink. I know the weight will catch up to that at different points. I just recently dropped another 10 lbs. after waiting 7-8 months. And remember, this is not a diet. It has to become more than that to truely suceed.

liz, does the uscg use an alternate method, such as body fat? if you are close to the goal next summer, prehaps they can use an alternate method to qualify you. i know you can do it! don't lose heart... it's too early to be talking this way!

A sure fire way to lose the fat is to weight train. Get some 8-10lbs dumbells to use at home if you can't join a gym. More lean muscle means more fat burning. It may weigh more, but you will lose the fat, get in shape and be able to eat more variety of foods. It becomes exponential. If you don't lose the weight, you still won't be able to join the Coast Guard, so what do you have to lose (besides the weight)? GO FOR IT!!!!!

Liz, you want to lose 72 pounds in about 7 months. So that works out to about 10 pounds a month. You might be able to lose that much weight in the first couple of months low-carbing, but after that, your weight loss will slow down.

It's possible to lose that much weight that quickly, but it's very difficult. If you still want to try it, Atkins probably isn't your best choice of plan. You need to start a regimen of exercise and restricted-calorie intake. You can try combining the calorie-counting with low-carbing -- there are some plans that do that. In any case, you will have to have a doctor help you with this, because that kind of rapid a weight loss is difficult and can be dangerous if not closely supervised. I'm quite serious about this.

Why does it have to be by this summer? Why can't it be sometime in 2005?

Liz, I don't mean to be unsympathetic, but you have already been given some good advice here. I urge you to read it again, and to understand that low carb eating is not a miracle and no one can promise you that you will lose a certain amount in a certain time.

Somehow, you have convinced yourself that if you don't lose down to 167 by next summer it will be the end of the world. Yet you complain about losing too fast, losing too slowly, eating salads, drinking water, etc. (yes, I've read all of your posts). We would like to give you support, yet you seem to be the one throwing road blocks up to your success, and setting yourself up for failure.

What I promise you is that if you do your best to follow a plan you could make great strides by summer toward your goal. You will feel better, be healthier, and hopefully be more able to understand that there are ALWAYS more options in life than we may see at any one moment.
