I've been eating this way for about a month and a half and haven't had many alcoholic beverages since beginning. Last night I had one glass of white wine (lower carbs) and I must say I don't feel very good today.

Does eating this way take the joy out of a good glass of wine for others? So far, it's seeming not worth it to me....and that's saying something becuase I used to LOVE my wine.

I find that I cannot tolerate alcohol nearly as well as I could before this woe. One glass of wine generally does the trick and two will give me a headache the next day. Just drink lots of water today and you should pull through (my plan as well as I had two glasses of wine last night, LOL).

    Ditto.

Low carb eating drastically reduces your tolerance for alcohol. Many people on this board have found that out the hard way!

Say it used to take 3-4 glasses of wine to really make you feel happy, you'll be feeling happy now after only 1.5 or 2 (depending on other factors of course)

    It's pretty crazy.

Make sure you drink TONS of water on a day you know you'll be having drinks in the evening and drink 1 glass of water with every glass of alcohol you consume. It also helps to have a little something to eat.

DO NOT DRINK ON AN EMPTY STOMACH! You will really knock yourself out.

Same experience here-if you think about it, you don't have a pile of carbs to soak up the alcohol. Fats and proteins don't soak up drinks very well at all compared to some bread and potatoes.

Not only am I a lightweight now - but I've also lost my "taste" for champagne and most red wines!

On the upside, I do really enjoy 4 oz. of hot sake or a really good martini every now and again...........

Good to know! I even had just devoured a fairly good portion of chicken and the most yummy green beens ever (used to HATE THEM) before the glass of wine and still no good on the drink!

Oh well....I'm 36 years old and ready for drinks to be a once in a long while thing. I can live without it if it makes me feel badly.

    Thanks, all! You're most helpful.

I still enjoy my glass of white wine. Two is the limit, or I'm guaranteed a headache.

Jana, it's entirely possible that your body has become more sensitized to alcohols, considering they are fermented. They should probably be completely avoided with the presence of Candida. I believe they use yeasts to ferment alcohol, so that would be a biggy to avoid. Your reaction may be due to Candida as well. That pesky critter can cause all kinds of "allergic" type reactions.

Actually there's more to teh intoxication increase than not having a stomach full of carbs to slow absorbtion. You can slow absorbtion with fats as well. eat a cube of cheese with each glass of wine. But even that won't help 100 %. The liver makes ketones out of alcohol and makes them with less difficulty than it makes them out of fat. So teh body prefers to use the alcohol first. A byproduct of the breakdown of alcohol into ketones is acetaldehyde, also known as ethanal, which is more toxic than alcohol and is responsible for many hangover symptoms.
