sorry for some reason above the text was not included

Im just starting out. Besides meat and splenda what else should I keep on hand.
on induction can I use ground up pork rines to use as flour if I want to fry something.
I know about the Atkins vitamins but do I have to buy them is there a cheaper substitute for them.
How do you keep track of the carbs you eat?

Welcome emptynester

More importnat than the food you need to keep on hand, you need the Atkins book and you need to read it!
You might want to start out by reading the Beginner's Guide (there's a link at the top left side of the page).

Besides meats and splenda, you need veggies! Lots & lots of them. If you're following Atkins, you need at least 3-4 servings during induction.

Yes, you can use the porkrinds for frying.

Many of us use http://www.fitday.com to track our foods. Some people just keep a written journal.

The vitamins I'll defer to someone else as I use prescription vitamins.

Hi Emptynester, Try frying things without flour, porkrinds, ect. I just fry the meat withing anything added. Works great!

Hi and welcome emptynester!! You've found a great place for support and good advice!!

Yes the beginner's guide is a great place to start...there is even a shopping list to get you started there! When I first began, I found everything I needed to do it right here and at www.atkinscenter.com in the "how to do atkins" section...read everything on induction. Then get the book and read it cover to cover.

As for vitamins, I take a good women's multi-vit/min that I get at Walmart, plus Citrical (calcium), and essential fatty acids, like fish oils/flax oil. There are many others you can add but these are the basics.

As for counting carbs...there is a downloadable carb counter on atkinscenter and I think here too...it really helps for counting things without labels, like veggies...I keep mine on the frig for quick reference. Otherwise, on labels, take "total carbs", subract "fiber grams", and that leaves you with your "net/countable carbs".

HTH!! Congrats on your decision for healthier eating!!

You've already received great advice. Another piece of advice: Avoid convenience LC products like the plaque. Many of us have learned the hard way that they generally do more harm than good. Try to stick with whole, unprocessed foods.

Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress and success.

I have the New Diet Revolution book by Dr. Atkins. And did not see a shopping list in it of the basic things to have on hand. I did go to the grocery store this morning and loaded up on fresh veggies and meat.
I was amazed at the low-carb products available, there was flavored syrups, breads, almond flour and soy flour. Since Im on induction and none of those items were on the list I did not buy any. I did get the Atkins ketch-a-tomato ketchup and bbq sauce.

Hi Emptynester!!! Welcome!!!! go to any good bookstore and find food counts books in the food section.

Eat your veggies!!! (avoid carrots, peas, corn, tomatoes and potatoes for now.)

You can have about 4oz. of hard cheeses per day too. (Avoid the processed ones with sugar and milk added)
