Hi everyone. My name is Mike and I want to say that this is a fabulous resource for information, support, and comfort. I am 24 years old and weigh 256 lbs. I was at 260, but have begun Atkins on 1-5-2004 and have already lost 4 pounds. Anyways, I have been big my whole life, but not always fat. In high school I was a 3 sport athlete weighing 200 lbs and moved like a 125 pounder. Then I went to college and things went down hill... I gained a freshman 15, a sophomore 15, a junior 15 and a senior 15. Before I knew it I was feeling like crap and looking just as bad. I have set my life long goal to be more fit and eat right.

I have been on Atkins before and dropped 28 pounds in 5 weeks, but never stuck to it... I was addicted to carbs and in college, carbs are hard to avoid unless you can cook yourself.

I recently discovered that I am Insulin resistant and that too many carbs causes more than just weight gain for me. I was working out 5 times a week doing cardio and burning 1200 calories per session and dropping minimal weight.... so the doctor did some blood tests and recommended a low carb diet...

I am also continuing my workouts at the gym 3-5 times a week doing lots of cardio. I am already very stocky from all my football years so I am doing minimal weight training; but enough to promote weight loss.

so here I am.

I am looking forward to sticking to it and making it a way of life.. not just a way of weight loss.

Welcome Mike! Sounds like you are on solid ground so far. Doctor's approval and weight training are a good beginning. which Low carb plan are you following?

Hi Mike!!

Welcome to our little family. You've found a great place to get information, encouragement and support.
It's great that your doctor supports your lc lifestyle. Add that to your terrific attitude, and you are sure to do well.
You're so right about it being a life choice, and not a "diet". I think that is the mistake that many people make.
Keep posting and let us know how you are doing, ok?

Welcome Mike...I agree...it sounds like you are on the road to wellness....a l/c diet and exercise work wonders hand in hand. I know I am living proof of that. I think you will be VERY pleased with how the two work together to lower your weight, and tighten your body, and most important...improve your health

WELCOME!!!!

Here's a link to the beginner's guide which is LOADED with very useful info. Beginner's Guide

Keep up with the weight training, more lean muscle mass means more fat burning. Muscle weights more than fat, so initially you may gain if you up it a bit. But it's the best way to burn fat.
