| My mother lost 75 lbs (has kept it off for over 5 years) through weight watchers and is now a certified weight watchers instructor. She keeps away from refined sugars and such but still counts poiints for eveything else (doesn't have to count really, shes knows the foods!). Anyways, she knows all about the atkins WOL but since WW worked for her, she is supporting me while I do my thing as I supprted her. She is a great inspiration seing how as she is 55 years old and in way better shape than me; she runs marathons now for peeds sakes :-) I am wondering if it would be hard to transition into WW after I reach my goal weight on Atkins with the idea that on WW I would cut out all the crap or limit it to the max (refined sugars, etc..). Lets hear some opinions!!! Thanks! Mike ====================== 260/251/210 ====================== |

| Hi Mike, I tried Weight Watchers a few years ago and I lost about 20 pounds over a 4 months - which I thought was good at the time. However, I basically lived on bread to do it. For me ww didn't address my real issue of being addicted to carbs and having highs and lows. So I didn't feel any better and sure enough feel back into my old ways of loads of bread and pasta. It was also very slow weight loss and when thats the case it is hard to keep up your motivation. I have been LC for about 2 months but only bought the atkins book last week. Started properly on monday and am 5.5 pounds down. And I feel GREAT. I also save the $15.95AU is costs to do WW per week plus the joining fee of $35. Thats a nice pair of shoes per month when added up. I have chronic fatigue syndrome and before xmas I couldn't even work 1 day per week. I have worked 2 days in a row this week - i couldn't be happier with the low carb way of life. Goodluck in whatever you choose! | Mike, if you have great success on LC, why would you want to switch to WW? From what I understand, WW allows carbs. LC not only helps us lose weight, but also controls our insulin levels, which sets up a cascade of healthy conditions. Going back to eating carbs and lowering fat, in my mind and from all I have learned, would put your body at risk for coronary heart disease, hi blood pressure, diabetes and on and on. Why not just keep doing this, support your mom, she will support you, and it will be all good. | One of the reasons for low carbing for me was to learn how to control carbs and not be so dependant.... I realize they were the culprit behind my excessive weight; but what I am trying to think about is wether or not I could go to a sensible eating lifestyle where I eat in moderation and well balanced.... this does not necessarily translate into high carbs nor very low carbs. I am still brainstorming the idea... I am enjoying feeling good, sleeping good and losing weight, so I will definitely think about it for months to come while i work my weight off. I did weight watchers with my mom for about 6 months and lost about 22 pounds which felt good... but I started eating fast food alot and got into a rut with work and personal things and lost focus of what I was putting into my mouth. Lots to think about... thanks for the feedback though! Thanks! Mike ============================== 260/251/210 - Started 1/5/2004 ============================== |

| Mike - I think WW would work for your maintenance as long as you ensure the following... Eat enough protein every day Eat enough fat every day Don't eat too many carbs I think the problem many low carbers have with WW is that WW people usually have a much different idea of what a "good low carb plan" should be. Many WW people believe that low carb is actually bad for you and that carb levels under 200 or 300 grams of carbs a day is unhealthy. Whereas here on this board we have people who can't go OVER 100 carbs a day or they're gaining weight. And to lose? They must stay under 50-60. The bottomline is, you'll have to lose the weight and start the WW maintenance and see what happens. Just pay extra attention to what you eat, how many carbs, fat, etc. and make sure you don't start climbing the scale. If you do, then WW probably isn't for you. If you are able to incorporate WW into your lifestyle as a maintenance program, then more power to ya! Good luck. Member since 2001 Mars...COOL! http://www.ilovelowcarb.com |
