Does taking thermogenics(xenadrine, hydroxycut, stacker II,ECA stacks) have any bad effects on a low carb diet? I am currently taking EAS Thermodynamics (ephedrine free) supplements and have just started my induction phase. is this a bad idea? Will it increase weight loss? or will it prohibit weight loss? thank you.

Welcome Monstruo!!!!

I have no idea what effect these supplements have. I choose to not use them. I used an Ephedra supplement a few years back for a couple of days and had to stop. It made me feel like I was going to have a heart attack. I don't know what's in all these ephedra-free supplements, so I don't have an opinion one way or the other.

I would caution you however if they contain any combination of Guarana, gotu kola, and caffeine, it can be just as bad as ephedra. If you do the LC eating properly, combined with drinking proper amounts of water and exercise, you shouldn't need those supplements.

Again, welcome to LCE!!!!

Thank you for the response Barb. One reason I was asking is because Atkins came out with a similar product (ACCEL)that compares to the one I am currently taking.

I'm not sure what those ingredients are, but it doesn't have a combo of those BAD things that I know of, that will make your heart race. I don't know, still, if it's a good idea. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Welcome!
I took the same supplement the first time around (prior to surgery) and successfully lost 50 pounds.

Monstruo,
If I may chime in:
When I read about supplements like that (ephedra-free or not), it brings to mind the "crash diet" mentality. If you are patient with this way of eating and treat it as a lifestyle change, rather than a "diet", the natural appetite suppressing effects of ketosis will kick in, and you'll find you don't need that crutch anyway. I think it's interesting that Dr. Atkins warned people that caffeine may stall their weight loss and encouraged people to stay off it, at least in induction -- but it's an ingredient in an Atkins supplement.

I really, really, would not take that stuff while low-carbing. A lot of those herbal stimulants work by temporarily raising blood sugar, which goes counter to the whole concept of low-carbing because it destabilizes your blood sugar.

Hi, I've been lurking for a while...but I read this post and thought I'd chime in for a change.

Reading over the ingredients, I noticed caffeine. Personally, I try to avoid caffeine (been through the withdrawl, don't really want to do THAT again).

But also of interest about these types of products is that there is usually a warning stating that people with high blood pressure, etc., etc., shouldn't use them. Well, one of the etc., etc.,'s is diabetes.

So, I figure if it isn't safe for a diabetic, then it probably isn't a good idea for this WOE either.

Now, of course, I'm severely insulin resistant (I have PCOS), so I'm a bit neurotic about these things, but, just my 2 cents worth.

On a side note....I very much enjoy this site. Lots of good information and support.

I'll try not to lurk so much in the future, but I'm anti-social.
