I"m pretty sure not okay. you subtract the fiber from the carbs and that gives you the total carbs and the sugar alcohols are not acceptable. Can't give you the specific whys, I'm sure someone will. Sorry if I'm wrong, but my guess would be no...

Alan, Lisa is right. Avoid sugar alcohols during induction. Get your own net carb count by deducting only fiber from the total carb count.

Even when you move to OWL, approach sugar alcohols with caution. Experiment to see how you react. Many people metabolize them very much like regular sugar, raising their blood glucose levels and knocking them right out of ketosis.

So if a product is considered low in carbs because they deduct sugar alcohals should PROBABLY be avoided and just take total carbs minus fiber to get real carb count?

I guess I have been decieved. I have been trusting what the labels say. For example Russell stovers low carb becan delights say tghat there are only 3.2 net carbs per serving. However the nutrition facts say 24 total carbs and only 1g dietary fiber with 19 g sugar alcohol. Therefore, it would be 23 grams per serving. How can they get away with saing 3.2.
BTW, Maggie...Have you ever been told you look like Susan Serandan (mispelled)

Good luck all!!

For those who don't know, sugar alcohol is actually a form of hidden carbs...that's why a lot of people who eat the l/c bars during Induction do not lose weight or it stalls them. I learned this awhile back and decided to precede with caution when it comes to those. I know that a lot of the products from Keto don't have sugar alcohol in them. I found out through the Keto Hot Coca product about the sguar alcohol being hidden carbs...sugar alochol can also cause bloating...

So let's make this simple for all.
Total carbs listed
Minus fibre
Equals the number to SAFELY use
No matter what the package wants you to believe.

Alan:

Not quite.
There's a hidden carb formula you can use here:

Hidden Carbs

If you want it in a simple Excel spreadsheet, I've made one and you can e-mail me at aprilreinhardt2@yahoo.com and I'll send it to you ASAP.

It sounds difficult, but really, it's not. Let's not make this harder than it has to be. If you have a foodstuff listing zero or little carbs, yet you see sugar or sugar alcohol in the ingredients, perform the hidden carb calculation to get the real carb content. Then you can subtract dietary fiber to get the ECC (effective carb content).

Or, you can choose to ignore all of that, eat the stuff anyway, and see how your body reacts to it. Some people are not affected in the least by sugar alcohols.

My two cents....

So, I'm thinking to myself "Who the **** is Tim Robbins?" (I am so not into knowing who's who.) So I googled him and got a picture. It's the guy from the Shawshank Redemption! Great movie! So was the book.

*** yup. Something else we definitely don't share. LOL!
