I busy filling out my Fitday site of all my foods and I am somewhat confused, do I count free foods toward my carb count of 20, like for example eggs? I have been and it just dawned on me that may not be correct, since technically they are free? Thanks in advance!

Hi Lucy,
You must count ALL carbs consumed. Actually, 2 large eggs have 1 carb, just so you are aware.
You calculate by taking the the total carbs minus fiber equals NET carbs or ECC (essential carb count). Net carbs are the ones that count if you are following Atkins

Let Fitday calculate your TOTAL carbs and then subtract your fiber carbs if it doesn't do that for you.

Hi Lucy,

When I am in doubt I use the US government to tell me how many carbs and other things are in food.

http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/nut_search.pl

Hope this helps

Well now I'm confused because my egg carton lists 1 egg as 1 carb. Then Shelley said there's 1 carb in 2 lg. eggs! Aren't we supposed to be going by the product label? I'm starting Induction tomorrow and right now I'm confused enough! I'll be happy to count 2 eggs as 1 carb, though.

maz,
I use the Atkins carb counter book and fitday as my sources. If the item is not in either place, then I resort to accepting the carb count listed on the label.

Actually one large egg has .558 grams carbs but labels will round up or down. Fitday will show 1 carb if you put in one egg but will still show 1 carb for 2 eggs. But when it adds the eggs into the total it will add in .558 per egg. If you keep track more informally then just use .6 carb grams per egg or 1.2 for 2. So no one would fault you for saying 2 eggs = 1 gram carb.

Barb Keith,
Could you explain this? You posted this statement earlier to Lucy "subtract your fiber carbs". Not clear on this subtraction maybe you could clear that up for me or show me where to find that info.
Thanks,
Mary

Sure Mary. What I do is to look at the label on the package. Let's use nuts as an example.

Pistachios 1/4 cup = 1 serving
Total carbs = 9 grams

fiber = 3 grams
__________

net carbs = 6 grams

Now if you are using more than one ingredient, count the grams of total carbs per item and add that up and the same for the fiber. Then subtract the fiber from the total to get the net. It's kinda like Total carbs is your gross paycheck. Fiber are the taxes and then what you get paid is the Net Pay.

Get it? or did I totally confuse you?

Fitday is a website where you can plug in your numbers and figure out where you're at. Here's a link: www.fitday.com

Barb K,
Thanks for your explanation for counting fiber. I cut and pasted it in my Microsoft Word which works so good for me for future ref.
You're doing a good job moderating. Thanks for your commitment!
