Daughter was talking to my dh yesterday and complained that she was fat, and he basically told her to lose weight...he and I both have been following the LCE WOL...and I thought that maybe I could talk her into trying this as well. Just not too sure how to approach her. She works at a fast food place so I know that might be a downfall for her (unless she could eat the burger minus the bun and be disciplined enough to do this) and she just moved back into town so she doesn't have a lot of money to buy a lot of expensive food...was thinking about talking it over with my husband to see if we cold buy her the first 2 weeks of food if she wanted to do this...but I'd like some suggestions of maybe how to talk with her since she is feeling that way about herself...and I would like to see her become more healthy...after all, she is only 20 so she's got a lot of years ahead of her...

I think yur husband gave you the perfect opening. You could mention that he was concerned and said something to you, and if she is interested, you've had some great success with LC.

My only worry is that she's really got to want to stick to this WOL if she's going to try it. So many people have messed up their "one golden shot" at Atkins and for some, each time they restart it doesn't work. You can't move a mountain in a day. Perhaps she can slowly start to lower her carbos, cut out pasta, etc. Sometimes this works better for people than going cold turkey.

That's not a bad idea. She is young, so, lucky girl, she'll probably lose faster than we older ladies do. What'll be tough if getting her to realize that now is the best time to develop healthy eating habits. Maybe she would do well on South Beach.

Funny, I just remembered that I am getting ready tomake the same suggestion to my FIL and MIL. He has gained so much weight over the past 10 years and she was just diagnosed with high blood pressure. Both doctors have said they must lose weight, but she is very resistant to cooking LC, and has bought into the myth that Atkisn will ruin your kidneys. So, I bought 'em a copy of South Beach, and I am sending it to them this weekend with a note that says SBD may be a better fit for them.

Think your daughter would respond well if you just gave her SBD?

I was considering telling her to cut out all the sugary stuff first - like the candy, cookies, etc...I know she will drop some weight just by doing that even if she doesn't change anything else...a friend did that, and she dropped 8 lbs in about a month...that wasn't a lot of weight but that averages out to 2 lbs a week...which isn't a bad weight loss at all. And then after she did that for maybe a month, tell her what else to drop and then what to add, etc...this might be easier on her rather than going cold turkey like I did. (I craved bread and pasta for a week but got over it) So we'll see what happens...thanks for the suggestions! Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated as well!

I always think the best persuasion is your own good example, Sheyla. But if she is asking, and also enjoys reading, you might give her Laura Richard's book "The Secret to Low Carb Success." Very, very good book which outlines most of the low carb plans, but also does a great job of explaining how LC works, and the health advantages.
