We have had 5 birthdays in the last 5 months in our little "group" here at the office. Four out of the five is on some sort of low carb WOE.

What's cool is that instead of bringing in the usual donuts or bagels, we have been chipping in and making a meat and cheese platter. We have little ham cubes or ham and turkey roll ups and the cubed cheese you can get in a bag. We throw it on a tray with some toothpicks and we are GOOD TO GO!

Everyone is LOVING the thoughtfulness for their WOE and it isn't too hard to do!

For that 5th person, we DID bring in bagels for her, because that is what she likes and it was HER birthday, but we made sure there was some low carb stuff for the rest of us!

It gets easier all the time! Maybe next time we will add a few strawberries to our tray.

Sidenote: Birthday girl today lost 8 lb. in 9 days on the South Beach diet. She appreciated our support!

That sounds like a great thing for everyone. I know it can be tough. We still have treats left over from the holidays in our office and today we had a salesman bring in 1 dozen Krsipy Kremes and one of my coworker brought in a box of donut holes... I laughed as I at a ham and cheese omelet.

Boy, Chicago! I'm glad to see you so easily resisting. I'll tell ya--Krispy Kreme draws me like a magnet, I'd be frantic trying to avoid grabbing one...or two, or three! God, they're my worst weakness! Anyway, you go Chicago!

That's funny, I got offered doughnuts today, too! I turned them down by saying "Idon't eat such things now, I'm a Low-Carber"! The person just said "OH, o.k."

What do you tell people when they QUESTION WHY you don't WANT what they're offering?

I had the same problem recently, I was offered a crispy creme by a biology professor. Since I didn't want to get into an arguement about being low carb with him, I just told him I was on a diet.

He said that he was impressed with my willpower.

HELLO KENT, OHIO!

You could say what I say, "Oh darn, I JUST ate something. I am sorry! Thanks, anyway!"

By now everyone knows how I deal internally with such issues ( Can't vs. Don't ) but what I say to people depends a lot on my mood, and whether or not I feel someone is being rude.

They range from the traditional: "I'm allergic to carbs, they make me break out in fat."

To the highly effective: "I'm making a political statment against 'big sugar'. Let me tell you about it." That one usually causes them to see someone across the room that they need to talk to.

To the blunt: " I don't eat that s***. 'You actually eat that s***?"

and everything in between.

What a coincidence. There's B-day treats in my office today too. I just keep walking past them, with no interest. She did bring apples and oranges too, but I don't eat those either.

I too will bring up the evils of the Agricultural Industrial Complex when people bug me about why I eat (or don't) certain foods.

But usually when people offer me something I don't want (or want but know I shouldn't have), I just say "No Thanks." When you attach qualifiers to your answer, you open yourself up to having to explain your actions. And honestly, it's none of their *&%^$# business why you don't want to consume something.

NEVER tell people you're watching your weight. That will only invite sabotage in them form of "Oh, it's a special occasion. You can have just one."

Gee, I think you touched a nerve with that one

I turned down a Krispy Kreme one time...someone heard that I had done that and commented, "oh, my gosh! People stood in line for two hours to get a hold of one of those!" More power to them!

I've had great success with "Go to hell."
