(Atkins) Reading the book is confusing to me. I know that My favorite carb-loaded foods are no-nos. See, I take anti-depressant medications and I find reading difficult at best now. I used to be such an avid reader, but these meds have altered my reading comprehension. My carb allowance is 20. Is there a basic induction (practical) menu available? Something easy to follow? Is there a carb-counter available on-line that I can print out and carry in my purse?

Hearts, Its very nice to meet you.

I good basic, everyday menu would go alittle something like this:

Breakfast: Something protein-filled such as boiled eggs or an omlette with cheese. Have a cup of coffee if you like.

Snack: 1-2oz of cheese, water

Lunch: A salad with full fat dressing (stick to Ranch and/or Italian..watch the sugar counts though) and maybe a chicken breast on top or have a can of tuna with mayo and make a tuna salad. Make sure you eat veggies! water or the occassional diet caffinee-free soda.

Snack: 1-2 cheese or some pepperoni slices, water

Dinner: Any type of meat, poultry, or fish. Another salad w/dressing or about 1cup of other veggies (you can find a list of legal veggies in the book).

Thats just a sample of course. There are many easy-to-follow lists in the book of legal foods that you can eat. Be creative, thats the most important part. If you get tired of what you are eating, you will be more tempted to quit. For example, I discovered I could eat taco salad on Atkins and its been one of my favorite meals. Just have taco meat, lettuce, salsa, back olives..etc. Delish. Drink lots and lots of water also, about 100oz a day.

There are many carb counter books out there, Atkins even has one that is a smaller size that you can carry it around with you when you are away from home. Its great to have when you go grocery shopping.

There are also alot of great resources on this website that you can browse also to find out lots of information. Good luck to you!

Hearts, Have you talked to your MD about how you feel on these meds? There are many different anti-depressant meds. Everyone responds to meds differently. Maybe the one you're on just isn't right for you and you need to be on a different one. Please talk to your doctor.

I agree about talking to the MD about the side effects of your meds. Those drugs are to help make your life better! With so many on the market they should be able to find one that works for you better.

Hi Hearts!
Yes, definitely see your doctor. When My dr. switched mine, life improved dramatically. I thought all anti-depressants "were the same". The goal is. Just the variations in ingredients can cause reactions in some people. So make an appt. asap with your doctor and discuss this with him. Good luck.

If your anti-depressant is making it that difficult to do just read, something you said you used to enjoy, it's time to tell your doctor to change meds. There are a lot of different choices out there, so you don't need to stick with one that has such an uncomfortable side effect.
