I'm moving along through induction pretty well -drinking lots of water, eating lots of veggies, etc. I feel pretty good, aside from the bouts of dizziness and sluggishness, and I plan on sticking with it for as long as it takes.

I have a weakness though, and it's sunflower seeds. Trying to get off of tobacco, I took up chewing sunflower seeds to substitute. I eat the low sodium seeds to keep the blood pressure in check, but I have still been eating them during induction. I'd say I probably eat about a cup of them every 3-4 days. Seeing that a quarter cup of kernals has 5g carbs, I'm really not ingesting too many carbs over the course of the day through the seeds.

I know Atkins says to not eat nuts or seeds during induction, but South Beachs says they're ok in moderation - and i eat them in moderation. Any comments on whether or not I'm shooting myself in the foot with these seeds? Thanks.

I ate some nuts and sunflower seeds in induction, and then the 3rd week I didn't have any, but nothing was different, so, I think you'll be fine

See where you are at the end of induction. If you are happy with your rate of loss while eating sunflower seeds then that isn't a problem for you. 1/4 c a day is a reasonable amount. I could eat a pound, highly salted, until the blisters on my tongue start to bleed.
LOL. So I don't buy them except rarely and in the individual size bag.

Me, a skeptic? I trust you have proof.

If eating sunflower seeds are keeping you off cigs, I would continue to eat the seeds. Good luck to you. I know just how hard it is to kick the cig habit.

I didn't have any during induction, but if they are a substitute for a cig--I would keep them available--the otehr is worse and I doubt you are shooting yourself in the foot--just watch the other carbs and keep most fo them coming from green leafies and I would guess you will be fine. I had almonds most days on my salad during inductiona nd lost 12 lbs in two weeks--so I figure it didn't really do much harm to my weight loss.

when I quit smoking i used to suck on - bite whole cloves, they worked very well cause they are not sweet and when they get kinda 'soggy" parden the expression you can kinda rap them a little with your molars and you get a sorta numb/burn sensation, best sub for ciggs I found, a health food store lady told me about them, cause I was sick of hard candy and sugarless gum, you ought to give um a whirl.
And best of luck to you , It's a hard habit to loose but worth it in the long run.
